DISAPPEARS

Over the past few years, DISAPPEARS has been regarded as one of Chicago's best live bands. Their brand of stripped down punk-garage-shoegaze has entranced many a drunken Chicagoan late into the evening & now we get a companion piece for those quiet nights at home with a bottle of wine or two, the waterpipe (tobacco only of course) & a nice set of headphones. It's fitting really that Kranky has chosen DISAPPEARS for their first full-on 'rock' album because these short bursts of pounding drums, reverbed-out guitars & barking vocals are like mini drone pieces in a way. Most of the songs are just one or two parts in under three minutes, absolutely drenched in warm fuzz & smokey haze. Ex- 90 DAY MEN frontman & current PONYS member Brian Case plays efficient rhythm guitar while belting out his lyrics in heavily delayed monotone. The rhythm section plays it Deutsch-rock style with straight 'NEU' beats from Graeme Gibson (also of FRUIT BATS) & cyclical basslines from Damon Carruesco. Ex-BOAS guitarist & I.D. checker Jonathan van Herik lays on thick melodies that make it all less VELVETS & more JESUS & MARY CHAIN. What more can we say, this is probably the most important Chicago rock record of 2010 so far so just get it already.
