DISAPPEARS
GUIDER
Kranky
It's been a quick nine months since the release of the first DISAPPEARS album "Lux" & we couldn't be happier about the early 2011 gift that these handsome local boys have bestowed upon us. "Guider" seems to pick up right where "Lux" left off. The forumula is still the same; shorts bursts of post-punk energy with pounding drums, heavily reverbed guitars & Brian Case's barked & somewhat buried vocals. The recording is a bit cleaner this time around though. Halfway through the album, the band veers off in a new course with the lengthy jam "Revisiting", a 15 minute + Deutsch rock inspired track that is the most diverse recording the band has put to tape. Surprisingly, "Guider" is the last album to feature the drumming of Graeme Gibson. SONIC YOUTH drummer Steve Shelley will be replacing him in the live setting but we're unsure about the permanent line-up of the band in the future. Another achievement for this talented Chicago group. For fans of JESUS & MARY CHAIN, NEU, SUICIDE, VELVET UNDERGROUND, etc...

IRREAL
Kranky
Chicago minimalist rockers are back in 2015 with their fifth album on Kranky. This has been the longest break between albums for the prolific group & during that time they've continued to perfect the art of restraint. "Irreal" is a percussion driven record with drummer Noah Leger & bassist Damon Carruesco leading the way on this dubby journey while the guitars provide crisp & rhythmic harmonics & noise textures. The singing is less screamy this time, instead Brian Case keeps it mostly soft & even to just a whisper at times. We're hearing a lot of PIL, POP GROUP, Jah Wobble, & KILLING JOKE here which is more than o.k. with us. Another amazing record from these Chicago boys.

Kranky
The third album from Chicago's DISAPPEARS marks a distinct shift in direction. This is the first album with now full-time drummer Steve Shelley from that band SONIC YOUTH that you might have heard of & the first without their trademark text-only artwork. The production is different too: Brian Case's vocals are almost entirely free of effects & the recording is much more crisp all around & less murky than the first two records. BAUHAUS & MAGAZINE are the first things that stand out in our minds comparison-wise but the JESUS & MARY CHAIN via V.U. sounds are still there. Shelley's drumming is a harder hitting drummer & he really propels these songs forward. It's kind of a no-brainer really that this is going to lift these guys to another level.
