First-ever "solo" album from ARIEL PINK (minus the HAUNTED GRAFFITI tag this time around) actually includes a long list of collaborators, including frequent HAUNTED GRAFFITI musician Kenny Gilmore & the legendary Kim Fowley. The album's 17 tracks are sorta split up by "vibe," starting in the dark & emerging into the light. This isn't a strict rule, as even PINK's darker songs benefit from his slightly-deadpan melodies & sense of humor. If you've been following Ariel Pink's interesting career arc, then you know that his albums are fucking weird but there's always at least a few 'hits' on there & "Pom Pom" is no different. "Not Enough Punch" & "Put Your Number in My Phone" are both excellent new-wave sounding pop jams. Another amazing record by Ariel Pink.

ARIEL PINK'S HAUNTED GRAFFITI
BEFORE TODAY (W/ DOWNLOAD)

2010 release from the project known as ARIEL PINK'S HAUNTED GRAFFITI (pretty much just Ariel Rosenberg and his band) - this record is full of hooks and memorable bits, but you have to get through the deeply odd production to hear them. This seems to be an alien satellite bouncing back transmissions from 70s AM radio, where you hear bits of DAVID BOWIE, JOHN LENNON, HALL & OATES, ROXY MUSIC and FRANK ZAPPA but they've been anally probed and fed through an intergalactic translator. Fans of YEASAYER or the MGMT's 'Congratulations' will love this! RECOMMENDED!

ARIEL PINK'S HAUNTED GRAFITTI
MATURE THEMES
4AD
Ariel Pink's 2010 album "Before Today" was a legit breakthrough for him & his band & it was by the far the most 'pro' sounding album he had ever made. "Mature Themes" is another shockingly good record but this time, he seems to have found the perfect middle-ground between his early lo-fi days & the polished studio sounds of "Before Today". 70's AM soft-pop still rules here as well as glam & there's even a little pre-programmed Casio sounding synth bits leading a few tunes but there's some heavier songs poking out their heads from time to time. "Mature Themes" reminds us of everything from Todd Rundgren to T. Rex to R. Stevie Moore to SWELL MAPS & even HAWKWIND on one track but the best think about an Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti album is that is really only sounds like an Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti album. Impressive for sure.
