Steven Rahman
In no particular order:

1) Mello Music Group’s 2014 Catalog

I tried really hard to narrow this down, but after really thinking about it, I could make a year end list of just stuff from this label. If you like Hip Hop, you WILL find something in this year’s releases that you will be listening to for years to come. Probably my most favoritest of the group is the Castle “Return of the Gasface: the Has-Lo Passages.” DOPE!

2) Hari Kondabolu “Waiting for 2042”

I don’t think I’ve ever included a comedy record, but Hari is not just funny, he’s funny, poignant, deeply relevant, & totally worth a listen.

3) The Internet “Feel Good”

Technically this was released at the end of last year, but for whatever reason there was a re-release issued this year, so… yeah. The Internet (OFWGKTA) is Syd the Kyd & Matt Martians. Many know of Syd as the engineer for a number of the early OF tapes, but here she serves as lyricist & vocalist. She’s got this really soft, sweet voice that really works well to compliment the grooves that Matt Martians put down on the bass & synthesizers. So cleanly produced, it sounds wonderful.

4) Robert Ellis “Lights from the Chemical Plant”

I’d include this just for the absolutely amazing cover of Paul Simon’s “Still Crazy After All These Years,” but this album is more than that. The writing is amazing. And while this is a much more Pop album than his prior work, but it’s still so very purely country & I really really like it.

5) Otis Brown III “The Thought of You”

Excellent Jazz record. There’s a lot of action happening on this record, it’s very deep & layered, & beautiful. Brown leads from the drums without overwhelming the other wonderful musicians he’s playing with: Subtle fills & elaborations that give weight to the percussion in a way that makes him the star while he carries the weight of the rhythm.

6) Kimbra “The Golden Echo”

Probably best known for here collaboration with Gotye on the most ubiquitous song of last year & her incredibly colorful, quirky videos, she came to my attention through a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop til You Get Enough” she did with Janelle Monae. “The Golden Echo” is a combination of R&B ideas with electronic instrumentation & big pop elements, & her voice is big & beautiful & expertly manipulated for some really cool textures.

7) Run the Jewels “RTJ2”

The internet’s immediate response to this record? Pictures of cars exploding. That’s it that’s all. Just a bunch of people telling the world that the “RTJ2” record was so awesome, it was destroying vehicles, & while the internet is prone to exaggeration… it’s actually that good.

8) The Roots “& Then You Shoot Your Cousin”

The Roots are in a whole new place, slowly but surely making strides in the incorporation of elements we’ve never heard in Hip Hop. They’re breaking down & rebuilding the genre before our very eyes & while it’s not the jazzy boom bap of the early days, there’s something about this record that when you hear it sort of screams the Roots.

9) Cyhi the Prynce “Hystori: Black History Project”

Every crew has a member that just sort of comes off weak… Until this record I thought Cyhi was the weak link of the G.O.O.D. Music label, but this right here, BANGS. This is two 15s in a Cadillac music. Straight up punchlines, street talk, & a lot of references to Black historical figures.

10) Big K.R.I.T “Cadillactica”

Speaking of 2 15s & a Cadillac music… Krizzle’s “Cadillactica” takes all the mixtape promise & puts it together for a Def Jam release that will have you rattling windows, & cruising through the hood at 12mph. Amazing, powerful rap music with one foot in the church & one foot in the shake joint.

P.S. Childish Gambino “Because the Internet”

I know, I know this actually came out in December of last year, & I was gonna leave it off the list, but it totally deserves a spot. This one was good from the first listen, it also has a very weird feel to it, Gambino is already left of center, but this is worlds better than “Camp” or the mixtapes. It draws from a lot of sources, there’s some Yeezus in there; a whole lot of Drake; a little “Channel Orange” for good measure, but this record owes as much to the major players in pop today as it does to Andre 3000 & the “Love Below.” Yeah Gambino can be corny, but the music’s still dope.

Honorable mentions:

Ana Tijoux “Vengo,” Oasis “(What’s the Story) Morning Glory [Reissue],” Lee Corey Oswald “Regards,” Schoolboy Q “Oxymoron,” Cheap Girls “Famous Graves,” Jose James “While You Were Sleeping,” Weezer “Everything Will Be Alright in the End,” Homeboy Sandman “Hallways”

Karissa Talanian
01 – Balduin – All In A Dream (LP/cass, Sunstone Records/Eye Vybe)
Little-known studio magician churns out glimmering baroque psych pop nuggets from his village in Bern, Switzerland.

02 – Wand – Ganglion Reef (LP, Drag City)
Cal Arts students get the Ty Segall production treatment and blow everyone out of their seats with this majestic explosion of wizard-defeats-mountain psych. FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN. Raises the bar for the hard rock/psych community.

03 – Perfume – s/t (Cass, Maximum Pelt)
Ex member of local punk legends Snacks (drummer moved to LA and joined the aforementioned Wand) forms a band with his best friend and the result is teenage angst & apathy perfection. Whatever forever.

04 – King Tuff – Black Moon Spell (LP&CD/cass, Sub Pop/Burger)
With legendary producer Bobby Harlow (one half of THE GO) at the helm, this swirling inferno of searing guitars, driving drums and a generous amount of hand claps and tambourine is a hit for teenyboppers and hardened guitar-pop fans alike.

05 – The People’s Temple – Weekend’s Time (LP/cass, State Capital/Eye Vybe)
Lazy summer tunes from Michigan’s kings of garagey psych surf. Their second full length of 2014 and their most dynamic release since their debut “Sons of Stone”.

06 – MAMA – Speed Trap (Cass, Postcaring Recordings)
Explosive power-pop-rawk’n’roll from Chicago’s underground. “Open Secret” might has well have been oozing from every car radio set to 97.1 since 1983. These guys rock and rule. Recorded by George and Alex of People’s Temple no less!
07 – John Krautner – Northwood/Lion’s Eye (45, Chatham)
Bubblegum goodness from the other half of THE GO’s new solo project.

08 – Pink Floyd – The Endless River
C’mon, Pink Floyd released an album in 2014. Pretty nutty, eh?

09 – REISSUE: Can – Monster Movie/Tago Mago/Ege Bamyasi/Delay/Soundtracks/Future Days/etc (LP, Mute)
Any self respecting music fan needs only two things: a decent stereo system, and every CAN album on vinyl. MUTE makes this attainable with affordable remastered versions of every record in their catalog.

10 – REISSUE: Led Zeppelin – I/II/III/IV/Houses of the Holy
Reissues like this can always be hit or miss, but these genuinely sound better, are beautiful, and each come with a bunch of extra material that is totally worth the extra cash. The alternate version of “Immigrant Song” on the deluxe reissue of III kills.
