JESUS LIZARD
RACK ("SILVER STREAK" VINYL) (INDIE EXCLUSIVE EDITION)
 cover
Ipecac
It's been 26 long years since there was a new JESUS LIZARD album & a few months back almost everyone was surprised to find out a new one was on the way. Their 2009 reunion shows were incredible but that was 15 (!) years ago so who knew what to expect but we're happy to say that this record ROCKS. All 4 guys might nearly be senior citizens with silver hair but they still bring it harder than almost any noise rock band. One of our favorite all-time groups is back & we're here for it. RECOMMENDED.

FLOATING POINTS
CASCADE (2LP, "SPARKLE" VINYL) (INDIE EXCLUSIVE EDITION)
 cover
Ninja Tune
Following his marvelous collaboration with PHAROAH SANDERS in 2021 on "Promises", Sam Shepherd returns to the sound of club music on "Cascade". Punchy, synth worship house merges with detailed, brain-tickling jazz-dance for a record equally attuned to both the dancefloor and the home stereo. RECOMMENED.

SINEPHRO, NALA
ENDLESSNESS (2LP, w/ ETCHING)
 cover
Warp
Gorgeous new record from London-based jazz composer NALA SINEPHRO, building up off the hype of 2021's "Space 1.8" (unsurprisingly a favorite of ours here) with a ten-part suite of ambient third-stream. Taking a sense of mantra/motif repetition of early 70s ALICE COLTRANE with the subtley lush dynamics of CLAUS OGERMAN's string arrangement work - or for a recent comparison the dynamics of FLOATING POINTS / PHAROAH SANDERS' "Promises" - SINEPHRO comes through with a meditative & impressionistic collection, again with help from Nubya Garcia and James Mollison as well as BLACK MIDI's Morgan Simpson. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

MIDWIFE
NO DEPRESSION IN HEAVEN ("RED APPLE" VINYL)
 cover
Flenser
Over the past few years the Colorado based musician Madeline Johnston aka MIDWIFE has made some of our favorite records. "No Depression In Heaven" is her 4th album. Madeline is a true master of minimal composition with songs that are mostly just guitar & voice with some occasional drum boxes & synth. Her songs are filled with longing & sadness for people & things that disappear as we live our lives. Songs like "Vanessa", an ode to her dying van or "Killdozer", a song about Marvin Heemeyer getting revenge on the town of Granby, CO. by destroying as much of it with his suped-up bulldozer before committing suicide. There's a great version of the Roland S. Howard song "Autoluminescent" which she really makes her own here. Another amazing album from MIDWIFE. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

LOCKS, DAMON
3D SONIC ADVENTURE ("PHOENIX GOLD" : VINYL)
 cover
Recording Device
This is the debut solo album by the talented Chicago artist Damon Locks. This music is only available on LP in a limited pressing with no streaming or internet presence. Locks' intention was for the listener to seek out the music at an actual record store instead of just clicking a button like most of us do these days. Unlike the BLACK MONUMENT ENSEMBLE records, his solo work is more sample based & experimental, with occasional beats & synth excursions. Another excellent record from our friend Damon. RECOMMENDED.

STILL HOUSE PLANTS
IF I DON'T MAKE IT I LOVE U (IMP)
 cover
Bison
This is the third album from the London based trio STILL HOUSE PLANTS. Jerky & spastic post-punk/ art rock with some no wave influence. Singer Jess Hickie-Kallenbach has a really unique vocal approach that's difficult to describe. It sort of has a R&B quality to it but also reminds us of Anohni's inflection. Some of the songs are arrhythmic like DIRTY THREE or THIS HEAT. We're really intrigued by this one. RECOMMENDED.

BELONG
REALISTIC IX
 cover
Kranky
It's been 13 long years since the New Orleans duo BELONG released the fantastic "Common Era" album. Michael Jones & Turk Dietrich have now created a new minimalist shoegaze classic with "Realistic IX" via Kranky. Blown out guitars, vocals buried just right & pulsing drum machine beats will make you want to keep coming back to this. There are songs in there somewhere we swear. One of our favorite albums this year for sure. RECOMMENDED.

SECULAR MUSIC GROUP
VOLUME 1
 cover
Love All Day
This is the debut record by the SECULAR MUSIC GROUP courtesy of the Chicago label Love All Day. A nice mix of late 60s/early 70s Blue Note, 60s/70s spiritual jazz & 20th Century classical minimalism. Group member Chistian Ruggiero is a successful composer for film & television so it's not surprise that there are also elements of library music & film scores by the great Quincy Jones & POPOL VUH. RECOMMENDED!

COLA
DEEP IN VIEW (BLACK-IN-RED VINYL) (2024 REPRESS)
 cover
Firetalk
Borne from the end of OUGHT, Canadian post punk trio COLA picks up where the previous band left off with tense, skeletal structure, but with a darker, sleeker motorik sensibility. Lead singer Tim Darcy's voice will be instantly familiar, and this should slide into the shelf near your OUGHT records no problem. Superb!

DIRTY THREE
LOVE CHANGES EVERYTHING (RED VINYL)
 cover
Drag City
"Love Changes Everything" is the first new album from the legendary Aussie trio DIRTY THREE in 12 years. Warren, Jim & Mick have been busy during that time with many other projects. Warren with NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS & soundtrack work, Jim with XYLOURIS WHITE & many other collaborations & Mick collaborating with others as well. In many ways this record seems less arranged & more improvised than previous DIRTY THREE albums. It's all SUPER loose but it works very well. Very glad they're back. RECOMMENDED.
