Estrela Acesa (ltd. Turqoise Vinyl)
Mexican Summer
This sophomore record from Sergio Sayed (a.k.a. SESSA) embraces the nostaglic sounds of midcentury Brazilian music: tropicalia, samba, MPB and bossa nova. Like on his debut, SESSA's music has a gentle, laid-back feel like a JOAO GILBERTO or early 70s JORGE BEN, but with an added element of gospel spirituality that touches on the more commune-ish ashram material from ALICE COLTRANE. This is an excellent record that should draw in fans of both classic Brazilian pop and modern folk. On Mexican Summer and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In My Own Time (2lp, 180grm 45rpm W/7"s) 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition
Light In The Attic
Karen Dalton's second album didn't get the attention that it deserved when it was released in 1971 but over time it has come to be considered as a classic. You'd think her connections to others in the scene like Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin & Fred Neil would have cleared a path for Dalton's success but a variety of obstacles including music biz politics & Dalton's drug/alcohol abuse stalled any momentum she might have had. The album was reissued in 2010 & artists like Nick Cave & Joanna Newsom cited Dalton as an influence & that & other excellent reissues helped her legend grow. In 2021 a documentary was released & now this beautiful deluxe 50th anniversary edition is here with remastered audio, two bonus 7"s, extra tracks, booklet & beautiful foil-stamped art. RECOMMENDED.

Folk Songs & Ballads (imp, Reissue)
Ici Bientot
A greatly appreciated reissue of this 1971 album by the then Paris based singer Tia Blake & Her Folk-Group. The album is a collection of American & British folk songs performed with fantastic confidence by the 19 year old singer. The guitar accompaniment is perfect for the songs & we know fans of everything from Bridget St. John, Vashti Bunyan, Nick Drake, Sibylle Baier, Bert Jansch, Sandy Denny, Nico, Francoise Hardy to Gillian Welch will LOVE this. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Light For Attracting Attention (2lp) (ltd. Yellow Vinyl)
Ever since their live debut in May 2021, there's been a burbling anticipation for the first full-length from THE SMILE. The trio of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and SONS OF KEMET's Tom Skinner have dipped into abstract and esoteric territory both in rhythm and composition, but ultimately these live performances and singles revealed a RADIOHEAD side project that is perhaps the most RADIOHEAD-esque yet. This almost feels like the spiritual successor to "A Moon Shaped Pool", seeing Yorke and Greenwood reference the sounds of coiled rage and gentle, despondent beauty from their past catalog while embracing their more contemporary grace and serenity. A stunner, this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Versions Of Modern Performance
Chicago trio HORSEGIRL makes their eagerly-awaited debut with "Versions of Modern Performance", seeing the teenage group explore angled post-punk and noisier discordance with grace and confidence, wrapping this sound around catchy, hook-laden pop tunes. There's an obvious SONIC YOUTH influence here, as well as a bit of GBV, a bit of WIRE, and a bit of that 80s/90s sound on Flying Nun. This is a fantastic debut from these local heatseekers. RECOMMENDED, and keep your eyes peeled for this group!

Pink Dolphins
International Anthem
The duo of Jaimie Branch and Jason Nazary return as ANTELOPER, drawing influence from Tropicalia and the music of the Amazon for their improvisations. Branch is a native Chicagoan herself, and brought in the help of local luminaries JEFF PARKER and CHAD TAYLOR for "Pink Dolphins". This is yet another stellar release on International Anthem, and of course comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Big Time (2lp, Ltd. Pink Vinyl)
Angel Olsen continues to reinvent herself on her 2022 album "Big Time." There's always been a country twang lurking in the background of Angel's music but she seems to have fully embraced it this time around. Her vocal approach is slightly different, maybe a little softer with some nice Linda Ronstadt esque harmonies & reminders of another great former Chicago based singer Neko Case. The music has a nice airy quality with pedal steel & synthesized strings providing a nice bed for the Laurel Canyon style countrified tunes. Reckless alum Emily Elhaj holds down that bass duties with confidence as always. RECOMMENDED.

I'm The Sky (2lp, W/ Book) Studio & Demo Recordings, 1964-1971
What a great collection here from the California folk singer NORMA TANEGA, most known for her 1966 album "Walking My Cat Named Dog" and the cut "You're Dead". This partially covers her time from the Village coffee house scene to the release of that first album, while it also focuses on her time in London and making both an unreleased second album "Snow Cycles" and a cult favorite third, "I Don't Think It Will Hurt If You Smile". The material here ranges from simple, unadorned folk pop tunes to rich Americana rock. Fans of KAREN DALTON, JUDEE SILL, BILL FAY and LAURA NYRO will find a lot to love on here! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
