ARTHHUR
Occult Fractures
 cover
Back to the Light
Chicago polymaths ARTHHUR follow up their superb 2018 LP "Lost in the Walled City" with an even grander and more ambitious project: expanding on the wild, furious disco-punk of its predecessor by drawing influences from lean motorik krautrock, lush Philly soul and the caged, darkened post-punk reverberations of early 80s Martin Hannett production at Factory Records, while maintaining their liberatory political edge in a world that's increasingly hostile to liberation. For fans of GOLDEN TEACHER, FACTORY FLOOR and GRAMME, This one is an absolute heater! RECOMMENDED.

HARVEY, PJ
White Chalk - Demos
 cover
Island
The PJ Harvey reissue campaign continues with her 2007 dark horse album White Chalk. Polly Jean took it upon herself to learn how to play piano & in the process this dark & moody album was born & its one of our favorites. Her piano playing is somewhat rudimentary but it works for this songs that have lyrical themes about childhood & her late grandmother. RECOMMENDED.

JOY, MIA
Spirit Tamer (ltd. Pink Vinyl)
 cover
Firetalk
Chicago's MIA JOY debuts with a soulful, soft-focus collection of music that draws influence disparately from "World of Echo"-era ARTHUR RUSSELL, quiet storm soul in the SADE mold, and ethereal dream pop like COCTEAU TWINS and THIS MORTAL COIL, all while staying thematically centered in the realm of the metaphysical and spiritual. The result is a heady, "nighttime" sort of avant-pop record that absolutely comes RECOMMENDED!

JENCIK, MATT
Weird Times
 cover
Gilead Media
An icy terrain begins to form on this record. A place where large, shifting landmasses inch towards one another & drift apart. "Weird Times" is the solo debut by Chicagoan Matt Jencik who has performed with bands like IMPLODES, DON CABALLERO, SLINT, & CIRCUIT DES YEUX to name a few. Created with a sampling keyboard (Casio SK-5) and a laptop, "Weird Times" feels like a soundtrack for our uncertain days. Influences for the record refreshingly vary from minimalist composer Philip Glass to writers H.P. Lovecraft & Lovecraft devotee Laird Barron. Tracks like "Northland" & "Cosmic Horror" harp on Jencik's interests in shoegaze & feel like blackened and deconstructed SLOWDIVE instrumentals. If you enjoy horror movie soundtracks, contemporary classical music, or drone, atmospheric compositions "Weird Times" is the perfect cross-section of each.

SAULT
Sault 7 (imp) 7'
 cover
Forever Living Origi
FINALLY! We've been trying to stock these records for MONTHS & they're finally here! SAULT is a mysterious group from the UK though through some digging there are theories that artists like producer Inflo, singer Cleo Sol & possibly even Chicago's Kid Sister are involved. This music is a mix of funk, minimalist post-punk similar to ESG, a similar post-modernism to another Reckless favorite GOAT, CAN drummer Jaki Liebezeit's motorik beats & more. This checks so many boxes for us & we're very stoked to have these! RECOMMENDED.

NATURAL INFORMATION SOCIETY
Descension (out Of Our Constrictions) :w/ Evan Parker
 cover
Eremite
Long-form live improvisation from Joshua Abrams' ensemble Natural Information Society. Incorporating the free spirit of Evan Parker's saxophone for the second time around. The compositions were created with Parker in mind and the group make a vast range of musical references. Minimal, driving, explosive even at times. Another great work from Chicago's underground jazz explorers. RECOMMENDED!

DISAPPEARS/ STEVE SHELLEY/ WHITE/LIGHT
Disappears + Steve Shelley + White/light (2lp, 45rpm)

Vampire Blues
Limited edition 2LP/45RPM release of these epic collab jams from 2009 featuring the first line-up of DISAPPEARS, SONIC YOUTH drummer Steve Shelley & SONIC YOUTH sound man Jeremy Lemos' WHITE/LIGHT band that also featured PINEBENDER guitarist Matt Clark. This is very much like DISAPPEARS but more "out" with heavy grooves. Comes in a bootleg style sleeve. We're the only store in town that has these so get em here! RECOMMENDED.

MADLIB
Sound Ancestors Arranged By Kieran Hebden
 cover
Madlib
"Sound Ancestors" has been out in the world streaming for a few months now & we're very excited to be able to finally stock these in the racks. This isn't the first collaboration between MADLIB & Kieran Hebden aka FOUR TET but it's certainly the most fully realized one. Hebden acts more as an arranger or editor for MADLIB's beats & samples. The album has a great flow & bounces from psych-rock breaks to soulful vocal passages, a decent variety of guitar samples, some jazzy excursions all combined with MADLIB's insane knack for digging out the coolest beats. Hebden's thoughtful arranging gives everything enough room to breathe & it really grows on you with repeat listens. AN INSTANT CLASSIC!

GENEVA JACUZZI
Lamaze
 cover
Mexican Summer
Geneva Jacuzzi is a L.A. based musician & performance artist & "Lamaze" is a collection of recordings from the early/mid 2000s reissued again by Mexican Summer. Hints of 80s dance, new wave & early hip-hop production with great analogue sounds that will appeal to fans of minimal wave, vaporwave, Italo disco & artists like Saada Bonaire, Patrick Cowley, Nina Hagen etc...RECOMMENDED!

YOUNG, NEIL & CRAZY HORSE
Way Down In The Rust Bucket (4lp Box Set)
 cover
Reprise
2021 is set to be possibly the biggest year yet for Neil's archive releases. We know of at least 3 that are coming & there are likely more. This 4LP set features the earliest live recordings of the "Ragged Glory" tunes in front of an intimate crowd in 1990. The recordings are raw & excellent sounding. RECOMMENDED!

WILLIAMS, YASMIN
Urban Driftwood
 cover
Spinster
Yasmin Williams is a 24 year old guitarist from Virginia. She uses a unique playing style with the acoustic guitar horizontal on her lap, tapping the fret board with her left hand & either plucking the strings with her right hand or sometimes a kalimba. Drawing inspiration from everything from Hendrix, the music of West African griots, NIRVANA & legendary black guitarists such as Elizabeth Cotten & Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Williams' playing sounds more like 80s & early 90s Windham Hill legend Michael Hedges than a lot of people might want to admit & there are even melodic similarities to some complex emo guitarists such as JOAN OF ARC/GHOSTS & VODKA phenom Victor Villareal. We're not sure why but this record couldn't come at a better time while we're snowed in with frigid temps in a pandemic in early 2021. RECOMMENDED.

VARIOUS
Virtual Dreams (3lp) :ambient Explorations In House & Techno
 cover
Music From Memory
The great Music From Memory label has made some of our favorite compilations over the past few years & for their 50th release they've tackled the electronic music that was the response to the raves & wild parties of the late 80s "summer of love." These electronic sounds were almost the opposite of the music played at all night raves, instead this music was for when you were coming down & or needed that "chill-out" time. Inspired by ambient & new age music, changed the sound of dance & electronic music forever. RECOMMENDED.

TRIBULATION
Where The Gloom Becomes Sound (bone White/black Melt Vinyl)
 cover
Metal Blade
The great Swedish goth metallers TRIBULATION are back with their 5th album & shockingly, the final album with main songwriter Jonathan Hulten who amicably left the group after finishing the record. Similar to their last few albums, this one owes as much to goth & death rock as it does to their early metal sound. Great songs & dark vibes that will appeal to their fans, stuff like SISTERS OF MERCY, CHRISTIAN DEATH & the classic Swedish sound. RECOMMENDED

BODY
I've Seen All I Need To See
 cover
Thrill Jockey
Big time return for this Portland duo. THE BODY departs a bit from the power electronics of their more recent albums, zeroing in on a live presence based around Lee Buford's pummeling drums and Chip King's thunderingly resonant guitar sheets of noise. Amazingly, this is one of the heaviest records in their catalogue; but more importantly that heaviness provides space to explore subtleties in the vicious crackling distortion. An absolute mind-melter! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

SLOWDIVE
5 Ep (imp, 180grm Reissue) (pink/purple Vinyl, Numbered)
 cover
Music on Vinyl
Music on Vinyl continues to reissue the SLOWDIVE EPs & this 12" is one of our favorites. On this one, the band explored minimal electronic beats with their trademark verb'd & delay'd guitar sounds & the result is the nearest they'd get to a dance record. RECOMMENDED.

HERON
Heron (imp, Reissue)
 cover
Trading Places
HERON was a group of British hippies that signed a deal with Dawn Records (COMUS, TRADER HORNE etc...) in the late 60's & went into the studio to record a single. The group hated the session so they opted to record their album in nature's studio, a grassy field. Their debut might seem a little corny in concept but it's a beautiful album full of simple songs with incredible harmonies. Imagine SIMON & GARFUNKEL if they weren't so square (no diss on S&G we luv em!) or PENTANGLE if they were more into the flower power thing. This is an amazing collection that will appeal to any fan of 60's British folk or fans of Devendra Banhart, Vashti Bunyan, etc...AMAZING stuff.

FLAMING TUNES
Flaming Tunes (reissue)
 cover
Superior Viaduct
Gareth Williams was a member of the highly influential THIS HEAT & sadly he died on Christmas Eve in 2001. The great Blackest Ever Black (RIP) reissued this on vinyl in the aughts & it was a big staff favorite & now Superior Viaduct has delivered their version with original tape cover art. The songs are a mix of ENO-esque experimental pop, lo-fi recordings that would fit in nicely on the New Zealand Xpressway label, Eastern influenced melodies & a playfulness that may remind you of Robert Wyatt's 80's albums, Kevin Ayers & Syd Barrett. RECOMMENDED.

PYLON
Gyrate (reissue)
 cover
New West
FINALLY. PYLON formed in Athens, GA in the late 70s. In pretty much any other place, PYLON would have been the best band there, but early 80s Athens also was the home of R.E.M & B-52s. PYLON had their share of success though releasing a handful of classic underground singles & albums & even opening for U2 on a tour. Reissues have been rumored for years but now thanks to New West they're finally here. The band's sound was tough & in your face, like GANG OF FOUR with all of the bass tone taken out or the most aggressive parts of BLONDIE amped up 100%. Their singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay has one of those amazing voices in post punk & new wave, bouncing between poetic speaking & totally crazed throat-tearing screams. We are so excited to be able to carry these records by this band truly deserving of their cult status. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.

STEVENS, SUFJAN
Ascension (2lp, Clear Vinyl)
 cover
Asthmatic Kitty
Recently Sufjan Stevens moved from NYC To the Catskills & while his trusty acoustic instruments were in storage he wrote & recorded the music that would become The Ascension with synthesizers & a drum machine. Though electronic, these are still Sufjan Stevens songs & the album is a dense 2 hours of danceable electronic pop, lush synth ballads & even some experimental/drone leaning moments.

CALLAHAN, BILL
Gold Record
 cover
Drag City
Just a little over a year after 2019's excellent "Shepard in a Sheepskin Vest", Bill Callahan is back with the aptly titled "Gold Record". This time around Bill brings in even more colorful instrumentation & an expanded musical vocabulary- with mariachi trumpets & guitars, even cowboy whistles shifting in & out of focus to a near psychedelic effect. Every song has a story to tell, with Callahan's free-wheelin' & wry vocals reminding us of the great storytellers like TERRY ALLEN & KRIS KRISTOFFERSON. The record also contains some 'gold' Callahan lyrics, including "it's almost beer-thirty", "...with eyes like honey-drunk bees", & of course the introductory line, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". As always, on Drag City & recommended!

ROLLING STONES
Goats Head Soup (2lp, 2020 Remaster) (deluxe Edition W/ Bonus Tracks)
 cover
Interscope
2020 remix & half-speed master of of possibly the most under appreciated 'Stones albums, "Goats Head Soup" from 1973. Mick, Keef & the boys were always thought of as bad boys, especially compared to their rivals THE BEATLES, but we know now a lot of that was myth. But on this album the weariness of fame and the road, drug use, the fall-out of Altamont etc... seems to have creeped in & permeated these songs. There aren't a lot of outtakes for their albums usually but this one has a decent amount including a mostly unknown track with Jimmy Page called "Scarlet" which is just bonkers if you think about it. RECOMMENDED.

NAUCKE, BRETT
Ems Hallucinations
 cover
American Dreams
The always reliable Chicago based experimental musician Brett Naucke recorded these pieces at his residency at the famed Stockholm Elektromusikstudion in 2019. Recorded on the legendary Buchla 200 series Analog synthesizer, Naucke has done a fantastic job of creating a heavy, electronic space for us to lose ourselves in during pandemic times.
