Modern Classics
The Modern Classics label (via Light in the Attic) celebrates the 40th anniversary of the first ever gig by the legendary experimental rock group of London known as THIS HEAT with three new reissues. "Live 80-81" was compiled by guitarist Charles Bullen & drummer Charles Hayward & features lo-fi cassette recordings from various shows across Europe recorded in 1980 & 1981. As you can imagine with early 80's boombox recordings, the sound can be rough at times but the performances are incredible & prove that they were a formidable live band at their peak. We are honored to present our own limited Reckless Records vinyl color of 100 copies of each of these essential reissues. This pressing is only available in our physical shops & web store & was also for sale at the 2018 Pitchfork Music Festival. RECOMMENDED OF COURSE.

CASE, BRIAN
Plays Paradise Official (imp, Yellow Vinyl)
 cover
Hands in the Dark
The prolific Chicago musician Brian Case delivers yet ANOTHER (3 in 3 years) solo album on Hands in the Dark. Case & his post-DISAPPEARS band FACS released an album earlier this year & though his solo work is a pretty different animal, it still fits in well in the universe of his rock band. Each of his 3 solo records have progressively gotten more melodic & this is definitely the "pop" record of them. Think early CABARET VOLTAIRE & HUMAN LEAGUE, Colin Newman solo etc...Fantastic stuff. RECOMMENDED.

New LP $17.99

NEQUIENT
Wolves At The Door
 cover
Nefarious
Debut album from Chicago's NEQUIENT is not messing around!! Swirling, chaotic, metallic hardcore that bridges the math-y & straightforward elements perfectly. One of the best albums we've had the pleasure of being crushed by in 2018! RECOMMENDED.

New CD $11.99

CRYPTOPSY
Whisper Supremacy (reissue, Silver)
 cover
Cosmic Key
YES!! Some CRYPTOPSY fans swear by the early, LORD WORM-fronted version of the band, but this, their 1998 album & first with vocalist MIKE DISALVO is possibly their most punishing album to date. Sure, DISALVO's vocals take more of a hardcore approach: a shout- growl instead of a growl-growl, but who cares when the songs are this brutal?! Limited, import pressing on Cosmic Key Records & very highly recommended!!

New LP $31.99

YUNO

 cover
Sub Pop
"Moodie" is the debut EP from the Jacksonville, FL based artist Yuno. Combining elements of bedroom pop, hip-hop & soul, Yuno's sound reminds us of a mix of TORO Y MOI, TAME IMPALA & SHABAZZ PALACES.

TAKAHASHI, KUNIYUKI
Early Tape Works Vol. 2 (1986- 1993) Volume 2 (imp)
 cover
Music From Memory
Japanese producer KUNIYUKI TAKAHASHI is the subject of this retrospective compilation from MUSIC FROM MEMORY, entitled 'Early Tape Works Vol. 2'. Composed of two volumes, these compilation reissues gather a selection of tracks from a tiny run of privately released tapes, highlighting a fascinating early period in KUNIYUKI's musical output. Incredible mellow sound, made with electronics of the day (TR-606, TB-303, Casio FZ-1 & more) in order to create what he calls a 'new Oriental sound'. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.

ABRAMS, JOSHUA
Excavations 1
 cover
Feeding Tube
Chicago string legend JOSHUA ABRAMS presents 'Excavations 1' on BYRON COLEY's Feeding Tube imprint. A free bass solo LP with much gnarlier tones than what he he normally demonstrates in a group setting. Here, ABRAMS pushes the sound into new realms and new sound palettes, freeing the bass from its accepted role. EXCELLENT.

New LP $23.99

HOWLIN RAIN
Alligator Bride
 cover
Silver Current
Ethan Miller is a busy man. If he's not shredding with COMETS ON FIRE or HERON OBLIVION, he's jamming with his more rootsy project HOWLIN RAIN. These tunes are all about keeping it "loose" ala 70's GRATEFUL DEAD, ALLMAN BROTHERS, & CSNY all with the taste level of Miller's other projects.
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $18.99

HEADS
Rkt! (3lps)
 cover
Rooster
3LP compilation of previously released material from these UK psych rockers. Their first 3 releases for the Rocket label are featured here including their first split 7" & the Sessions 2 12" from 2002.
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $29.99

KISSISSIPPI
Sunset Blush
 cover
Self
Self-released album from Philly's KISSISSIPPI comes after the band was signed to SideOneDummy Records & that label downsized their roster. Not retaining this strong pop band was a mistake in our opinion. Fans of COURTNEY BARNETT or BEACH SLANG check it out!

New LP $27.99

NYONI, MIKE & BORN FREE
My Own Thing
 cover
Now Again
Super fancy collection of '70s recordings by Zambian guitarist & songwriter MIKE NYONI, as well as tracks recorded with his band BORN FREE (who you might remember from Now Again's "Welcome to Zamrock" comp). Funky Zamrock for fans of RIKKI ILILONGA or PAUL NGOZI.
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $51.99

SNAIL MAIL
Lush
 cover
Matador
"Lush" is the debut album by the 18 year old phenom Lindsey Jordan. She was born & raised in Baltimore & currently lives in Brooklyn. It's crazy enough that Jordan has released a debut this good at her age, but she's also a fantastic guitar player. Some of the playing is fairly straightforward, but she chooses interesting chords & she sounds like a vet. Her songs have a youthful exuberance, but there's an almost frustrating (frustrating in that this reviewer remembers how bad his songs at 18 were) maturity to them. Think Kurt Vile, HOP ALONG, Courtney Barnett, Julie Byrne, etc... AN AMAZING DEBUT.
Available at: Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $18.99

STETSON, COLIN
Hereditary (soundtrack)
 cover
Milan
The 2018 movie "Hereditary" is easily the most hyped horror films in a few years & based on the early reviews, that hype is valid. The extremely talented saxophone player (and former ARCADE FIRE member) Colin Stetson composed the score to the film & the music he has created is creepy in its own right. Using instruments like bass clarinet & contrabass along with his trademark style of muscular sax playing that involves cyclical breathing technique & singing while playing, Stetson has created a terrifying score that hints at classic horror scores of the 70's & 80's while still sounding fresh. RECOMMENDED.
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $29.99

SECOND DIRECTION
Four Corners (2lp) Steps Ahead
 cover
Sonorama
Very cool reissue of this jazz-fusion-funk library- music LP, which was assembled by saxophonist & flutist FRITZ MUNZER in 1976. This two-LP set contains not only the "Four Corners" LP, but also six tracks from the project's unreleased 1978 follow up, "Steps Ahead!"
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $34.99

BONET, KADHJA
Childqueen (indie-exclusive) (colored Vinyl)
 cover
Fat Possum
This second album by KADHJA BONET is lumped into the Soul section simply because her sound is rooted in that lush, '70s, symphonic-soul sound, but BONET (who also played most of the music on "Childqueen") is a classically-trained violinist & the chamber-pop aspect of her music shouldn't be overlooked.
Available at: Milwaukee Ave. and Loop
New LP $17.99

EXPRESS RISING
Fixed Rope Ii
 cover
Numero Group
Dante Carfanga is back with his EXPRESS RISING project. "Fixed Rope" is a collection of beautiful ambient pieces all mostly drenched in a healthy amount of reverb. The EXPRESS RISING records all have that "soundtrack to a movie that doesn't exist" vibe to them & this one is no different. Short songs that all have a sense of longing to them, made with mostly guitar, drum machine & piano. Fans of everything from ELUVIUM to David Axelrod to EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY will approve.

New LP $19.99

MCCLELLAN, SAM
Music Of The Five Elements (reissue)
 cover
Seance Center
First ever vinyl reissue for this fantastic & peaceful 1982 album of self-proclaimed "healing music" by Sam McLellan. The music is based on the Chinese philosophy of acupuncture & the whole album flows together naturally using fingerstyle guitar ala Robbie Basho & Jim O'Rourke, Chinese flute & even some drone elements. This reminds us a lot of the mellower side of POPOL VUH. Recommended!
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $26.99

FORMAN, JOANNE
Cave Vaults Of The Moon
 cover
Seance Center
Back in 1987 Joanne Forman composed this music for an exhibit of sculptures in Mexico. The music was played at the exhibit then more or less disappeared until now. Using a variety of 80's synths, flute & guitar, Forman created a futuristic soundtrack for sculptures that were created by fictional aliens on the moon. It's easy to imagine this fantastic alien race going living their lives on the moon with this music floating in the air. RECOMMENDED!
Available at: Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $26.99

TANCRED
Nightstand (180grm Green Vinyl)
 cover
Polyvinyl
"Nightstand" is the 2018 album from Jess Abbott aka TANCRED. This one is maybe a little softer than "Out of the Garden" which allows for Abbott's songwriting prowess to really shine. Fans of the last one, 90's alt rock ala WEEZER & THE BREEDERS, HOP ALONG & BEST COAST will love.
Available at: All Stores
New LP $18.99

ZUIDER ZEE
Zeenith (indie Only Color Vinyl) (remaster)
 cover
Light In The Attic
We were shocked to discover that these 1973 recordings by the Memphis via Louisiana band ZUIDER ZEE were never released until now. Top notch power pop with some progressive elements that reminds us of everything from Todd Rundgren, BADFINGER, WINGS, BIG STAR & even KING CRIMSON at times. Every time you think there aren't any records like this out there to discover, somebody digs up a gem like this one. RECOMMENDED.
Available at: Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $23.99

JOAN OF ARC
1984' (yellow Vinyl)
 cover
Joyful Noise
The talented Chicago artist (and sweetest girl on the planet) Melina Ausikaitis started performing as an a cappella singer a few years back. Sometimes she'd perform with a fake guitar that is just a chunk of wood shaped like a guitar without any strings. Soon after she joined JOAN OF ARC & has been a member ever since. "1984" is an album of those a cappella songs with JOAN OF ARC backing her up & it's wonderful. Melina's songs are more like short stories or journal entries & the musical accompaniment has a mostly improvised, sound collage vibe that reminds us of the early BOOKS albums. Anybody that's followed JOAN OF ARC should be comfortable with the group pushing the boundaries of their sound & they've truly gone as far out as possible this time. RECOMMENDED.
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $17.99

BOZULICH, CARLA
Quieter (w/ Poster)
 cover
Constellation
2018 album by the prolific avant-garde artist Carla Bozulich. After experiencing some ear damage on tour recently, Bozulich began going through old recordings & not surprisingy found herself focusing on quieter music. With some help from Marc Ribot (who wrote the song they perform together), Sarah Lipstate aka NOVELLER & a few others, Bozulich continues to push the boundaries of contemporary "pop" music. Fans of Kate Bush, Bjork, Patti Smith, Tom Waits etc... will approve.
