FEMINAZGUL
No Dawn For Men (color Vinyl)
 cover
Tridroid
Not only is FEMINAZGUL one of the best band names we've heard about in a while, but this Asheville metal band has made one of the most interesting metal albums of 2020. The album opens with an accordion dirge that devolves into a melodic drone with raspy vocals. As the album proceeds that group continues to surprise with interesting arrangements & new sounds for modern metal. BOTANIST comes to mind because of the odd instrumentation as well as WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM & there are some nods at drone like "Forgiver, I Am Not Yours" which would fit on a HORSEBACK record. RECOMMENDED.

ROXANNE, ANA
Because Of A Flower
 cover
Kranky
We loved the first album by the New York based artist Ana Roxanne & her second album & first for Kranky is even better. The album opens with a spoken word piece that sets a theme for the album: identifying as intersex. The rest of the album fits right in on Kranky opening with a rich, GROUPER esque drone piece follows with a mellow loop & beautiful choral vocals, a track that reminds us of MJ GUIDER & ending with a track that reminds us of LABRADFORD as well as nods at Japanese ambient & furniture music like the great Hiroshi Yoshimura. Top notch drone/new age & definitely RECOMMENDED.

FLAMING TUNES
Flaming Tunes (reissue)
 cover
Superior Viaduct
Gareth Williams was a member of the highly influential THIS HEAT & sadly he died on Christmas Eve in 2001. The great Blackest Ever Black (RIP) reissued this on vinyl in the aughts & it was a big staff favorite & now Superior Viaduct has delivered their version with original tape cover art. The songs are a mix of ENO-esque experimental pop, lo-fi recordings that would fit in nicely on the New Zealand Xpressway label, Eastern influenced melodies & a playfulness that may remind you of Robert Wyatt's 80's albums, Kevin Ayers & Syd Barrett. RECOMMENDED.

HUM
Inlet
 cover
Earth Analog
In the middle of the pandemic in 2020 we got a nice surprise when HUM dropped their first album in 22 years without any warning. After numerous delays the physical versions are finally here. The band hasn't changed their sound much, maybe just updated it a little more with modern effects pedals & synths. This is a strong album with memorable riffs & vocals melodies. This one maybe feels a little more shoegaze but it's still got some muscle to it. Fans of their original albums & stuff like SHINER, early SMASHING PUMPKINS, CHAVEZ, TORCHE, SWERVEDRIVER etc... will love this. RECOMMENDED.

PYLON
Gyrate (reissue)
 cover
New West
FINALLY. PYLON formed in Athens, GA in the late 70s. In pretty much any other place, PYLON would have been the best band there, but early 80s Athens also was the home of R.E.M & B-52s. PYLON had their share of success though releasing a handful of classic underground singles & albums & even opening for U2 on a tour. Reissues have been rumored for years but now thanks to New West they're finally here. The band's sound was tough & in your face, like GANG OF FOUR with all of the bass tone taken out or the most aggressive parts of BLONDIE amped up 100%. Their singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay has one of those amazing voices in post punk & new wave, bouncing between poetic speaking & totally crazed throat-tearing screams. We are so excited to be able to carry these records by this band truly deserving of their cult status. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.

STEVENS, SUFJAN
Ascension (2lp, Clear Vinyl)
 cover
Asthmatic Kitty
Recently Sufjan Stevens moved from NYC To the Catskills & while his trusty acoustic instruments were in storage he wrote & recorded the music that would become The Ascension with synthesizers & a drum machine. Though electronic, these are still Sufjan Stevens songs & the album is a dense 2 hours of danceable electronic pop, lush synth ballads & even some experimental/drone leaning moments.

DENNY, MARTIN
Exotica (reissue Red Vinyl, Mono) Limited To 1000
 cover
Jackpot
The late 50s albums by Martin Denny, the father of the "Exotica" movement, are available once again this time on limited color vinyl on Jackpot Records. Lounge/tiki records seem to have a resurgence every 10 years or so & after Numero released their excellent "Technicolor Paradise" compilation a few years back it seemed like people were ready to dig in again. There's a reason these records are considered classics so there's no time like the present to get loungey! RECOMMENDED!

CALLAHAN, BILL
Gold Record
 cover
Drag City
Just a little over a year after 2019's excellent "Shepard in a Sheepskin Vest", Bill Callahan is back with the aptly titled "Gold Record". This time around Bill brings in even more colorful instrumentation & an expanded musical vocabulary- with mariachi trumpets & guitars, even cowboy whistles shifting in & out of focus to a near psychedelic effect. Every song has a story to tell, with Callahan's free-wheelin' & wry vocals reminding us of the great storytellers like TERRY ALLEN & KRIS KRISTOFFERSON. The record also contains some 'gold' Callahan lyrics, including "it's almost beer-thirty", "...with eyes like honey-drunk bees", & of course the introductory line, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". As always, on Drag City & recommended!

ROLLING STONES
Goats Head Soup (2lp, 2020 Remaster) (deluxe Edition W/ Bonus Tracks)
 cover
Interscope
2020 remix & half-speed master of of possibly the most under appreciated 'Stones albums, "Goats Head Soup" from 1973. Mick, Keef & the boys were always thought of as bad boys, especially compared to their rivals THE BEATLES, but we know now a lot of that was myth. But on this album the weariness of fame and the road, drug use, the fall-out of Altamont etc... seems to have creeped in & permeated these songs. There aren't a lot of outtakes for their albums usually but this one has a decent amount including a mostly unknown track with Jimmy Page called "Scarlet" which is just bonkers if you think about it. RECOMMENDED.

NAUCKE, BRETT
Ems Hallucinations
 cover
American Dreams
The always reliable Chicago based experimental musician Brett Naucke recorded these pieces at his residency at the famed Stockholm Elektromusikstudion in 2019. Recorded on the legendary Buchla 200 series Analog synthesizer, Naucke has done a fantastic job of creating a heavy, electronic space for us to lose ourselves in during pandemic times.

OLSEN, ANGEL
Whole New Mess (clear Smoke Translucent)
 cover
Jagjaguwar
Though this might seem like a pandemic record, This record of stripped down versions of the "All Mirrors" songs was originally recorded at Phil Everum's (MICROPHONES/MT. EERIE) Unknown studio in Washington back in 2018. These versions were originally intended to be released side by side with "All Mirrors" but it sort of makes sense now that she decided to hold them back. Recently the Chicago ex-pat has discussed in interviews that she's backing away from some of the more visible aspects of being a "rock star" so a return to her more minimal songwriting style makes sense. We're just happy that she decided to release these amazing versions. RECOMMENDED OF COURSE!

MICROPHONES
Microphones In 2020 (2lp)
 cover
PW Elverum & Sun
If you've been following Phil Elverum's life over the past few years then you know he's been through a lot. But now deep in 2020, we've ALL been through a lot & this record might help some of us deal with that. Elverum has re-started his adored MICROPHONES project with a 45 minute song. It starts with an acoustic riff that repeats for almost 8 minutes before he gets to singing. The song is like a short story about his life as a musician or a lengthy journal entry. Drums, distorted bass & guitar, piano, drones & various other instruments come in & out but mostly the song is based around the same acoustic riff. Lengthy conceptual songs like this can go very wrong but this definitely works. RECOMMENDED.

POLIZZE, MIKE
Long Lost Solace Find (transparent Blue Vinyl, Ltd.)
 cover
Paradise of Bachelor
"Long Lost Solace Find" is the debut solo album by Mike Polizze of PURLING HISS & BIRDS OF MAYA. With help from buds like Kurt Vile & WAR ON DRUGS engineer Jeff Zeigler, Polizze has now made his own classic Philly record. There's no way you can listen to a song like "Cheewawa" & not hum the melody to yourself for the rest of the day. Mellow acoustic rock that will appeal to KV, WAR ON DRUGS, Steve Gunn, AFGHAN WHIGS, & THE CHURCH will dig this. RECOMMENDED.

New LP $19.99
OHMME
Fantasize Your Ghost (color Vinyl)
 cover
Joyful Noise
The massively talented Chicago duo OHMME are back with their third album. Sima Cunningham & Macie Stewart are both fantastic guitarists, multi-instrumentalists & their vocal harmonies are truly impressive. Crisp & complex songs that almost veer into math rock territory at times. Fans of ST. VINCET, THE ROCHES, TALKING HEADS, FIERY FURNACES etc... will love this. RECOMMENDED.
Available at: Milwaukee Ave and Loop
New LP $20.99
SKELETON
Skeleton (color Vinyl)
 cover
20 Buck Spin
This is the debut album from the Austin, TX band SKELETON. Melodic but crushing metal that scratches so many itches for us. There are so many memorable riffs on here, tons of tempo changes & even some clean intros that would make James Hetfield blush. Things that come to mind are CRAFT's excellent "Fuck the Universe", later DARKTHRONE, MOTORHEAD, SLAYER etc...This is definitely going to be on our end of the year list. RECOMMENDED.

COUNT OSSIE & THE MYSTIC REVELATION...
Grounation (3lp, Reissue) Of Rastafari
 cover
Dub Store
ESSENTIAL reissue of this classic Rastafarian record by the Jamaican drummer Count Ossie. Rastafarians were considered outcasts in Jamaica in the 50s when Ossie was getting his start but they gradually became accepted in the music scene. In 1973 Count Ossie released this incredible album of music dedicated to the Africans that were brought to Jamaica as slaves. Heavy & repetitive percussion & a almost improvisational jazz feel, this album will appeal to fans of 70s spiritual jazz like Eddie Gale, Chicago's own Philip Cohran & even the early Moondog records at times. RECOMMENDED.

YAEJI
What We Drew
 cover
XL
"What We Drew" is the fantastic album from the Korean-American artist Kathy Lee aka YAEJI. Alternating back & forth between Korean & English lyrics, Lee often quietly sings over lush & mellow beats & playful electronic production. Some of this feels like nerdier Awkwafina or Billie Eilish if she got into house music. It's all really fun, effortless & refreshing sounding.
Available at: Belmont and Milwaukee Ave
New LP $21.99
AYLER, ALBERT
New Grass (third Man Reissue)
 cover
Third Man
Third Man gets into the jazz game with this reissue of the classic but often misunderstood 1969 album by saxophone legend Albert Ayler. A mix of his free jazz style with some groovy soul tunes, electric bass, spoken word passages, gospel inspired backing vocals & more. It's easy to imagine that this must have turned a lot of heads back in the day, especially some stuffy critics. RECOMMENDED.

COUNTRY WESTERNS
Country Westerns
 cover
Fat Possum
COUNTRY WESTERNS are a trio from Nashville that doesn't play country western music. Their sounds owes more to 80's Minneapolis bands like THE REPLACEMENTS & early SOUL ASYLUM than any Grand Ole Opry performers. The band features members of SILVER JEWS, GENTLEMEN JESSE & former Reckless alum & STATE CHAMPION member Sabrina Rush. HELL YEAH!

VARIOUS ARTISTS
Louis Wayne Moody High (2lp) (in Faux-leather "yearbook" Jacket)
 cover
Numero Group
An excellent compilation of mysterious underground garage rock tunes from the 60s. Like the best genre compilations, this one has a really specific vibe & the songs sound excellent together. This one sort of reminds us of the excellent "Anxious Color" comp on Mississippi. RECOMMENDED.

New LP $27.99
POTTERY
Welcome To Bobby's Motel (yellow Vinyl)
 cover
Partisan
Montreal's POTTERY explodes with energy on their first full-length, channeling the funk-punk of the New York scene in the late 70s / early 80s (KONK, BUSH TETRAS, LIQUID LIQUID) as well as the titans of the off-kilter we all know and love -- DEVO, all while never taking themselves or their lyrical content all that seriously. "Bobby's Motel" embraces its own excess, with the odd songwriting and vocal delivery bolstered by massive percussion and juicy guitar hooks. RECOMMENDED!

New LP $20.99
MUTE DUO
Lapse In Passage
 cover
American Dreams
Chicagoans Sam Wagster on pedal steel & drummer Skyler Rowe are Mute Duo. Dusty instrumentals for just when the sun is going down that owe as much to Neil Young's "Dead Man" soundtrack as they do the DIRTY THREE. Excellent stuff.

CIVIC CENTER
Ground Below
 cover
American Dreams
2020 album by the Chicago band CIVIC CENTER. Heavy Factory Records vibes with even a little Martin Hannett sounding drum production & some deep vocals that might remind you of a certain Factory band's deep voiced singer. Fans of JOY DIVISION, THE WAKE, CRISPY AMBULANCE, the pre-industrial Manchester etc... will dig this.
