WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN
ATOMOS
Kranky
"Atomos" is the 2nd album from the drone duo known as A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN. The music was commissioned by the choreographer Wayne McGregor who you might know from the somewhat goofy dance moves he coached to Thom Yorke for RADIOHEAD's "Lotus Flower" video. Something tells us he has different moves in mind for "Atomos." AWVFTS is Adam Wiltzie of STARS OF THE LID & Dustin O'Halloran who played with SPARKLEHORSE & like SOTL, the duo patiently let their music progress & develop slowly. There's more synth & organ drones on this one but there's still plenty of the beautiful orchestral swells that Wiltzie has now trademarked with his two groups. There are hints of the sounds on the first LP, especially "Atomos V", but the duo definitely has added to their texture pallet on this one. If you're going to pick up any neo-classical leaning drone record in 2014, this is probably the best one to get. On Kranky & RECOMMENDED!!

WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN
IRIS (SOUNDTRACK)
Erased Tapes
Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie & Dustin O'Halloran return as A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN with a score for the French erotic thriller "Iris." The duo started with some modular synth experimentations & then brought in a 40 piece orchestra to fill-out their grand ideas. The music has a more traditional "soundtrack" feel than their album work with hints of 70's & 80's sci-fi/horror scores mixed with their lush composition style. Fans of AWFTS, STARS OF THE LID, Max Richter, Johann Johannsson etc... will dig.

WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN
WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN
Kranky
A WINGED VICTORY FOR THE SULLEN is the brainchild of STARS OF THE LID's Adam Wiltze & ex-SPARKLEHORSE member & composer Dustin O'Halloran. 'Supergroup' is a term that doesn't normally get tossed around when discussing ambient music but we supoose this is about as close as you'll get. STARS OF THE LID is definitely a reference point here but the heavily reverbed string parts that are at the forefront of SOTL records take a backseat to the minimalist piano arrangements that lead this album. A handmade, Italian 'Fazioloi' piano was used as well as a piano in the Grunewald Church in Berlin backed with Peter Broderick on violin & Hildur Gudnadottir among others in the brass & string section. Imagine minimalist French piano music ala Erik Satie backed with STARS OF THE LID or 'Discreet Music" era Eno ambience. This will definitely please any SOTL fan or anyway that follows the Kranky label. This will with out a doubt, make a few employee best of lists for 2011.
