JAY, ABNER
TRUE STORY OF ABNER JAY (W/ALL INSERTS)
MISSISSIPP
Abner Jay started playing music in the early 1930's on the Georgian plantation where he worked. He started out as a singer but over time he learned the banjo & became a one man band. It's not clear when these recordings were made but it was likely in the 60's or 70's when Abner was a well known Atlanta restaurant performer. The songs are drenched in blues, folk & country but none of them are specifically one of those genres. There are few songs recorded with a proper band & those songs almost sound like ELVIS or EDDY ARNOLD. Lyrically, the songs are pretty dark, mostly influenced by Jay's rough life on the road supposedly as a pimp & widower to three woman that died of drug overdoses. Weirdo outsider blues-folk-Americana that is going to exicte you as much as it may freak you out. ESSENTIAL.
