BIRD, ANDREW
BREAK IT YOURSELF
MOMPOP
2012 & seventh solo album from local guy ANDREW BIRD was recorded mostly live to tape in BIRD's barn, & maybe because of that, this album has a looser, breezier feel than his last few records, which were deep with layers & very dense. There's still enough going on here to keep us interested, though, including a guest appearance from ANNIE CLARK (ST. VINCENT) & beautiful artwork from a trifecta of Chicago artists: DAMON LOCKS, JAY RYAN & JASON HARVEY. Another solid entry into BIRD's stellar catalog. RECOMMENDED!!

NOBLE BEAST/USELESS CREATURES (2CD)
FATPOSSUM
2009 release from ANDREW BIRD, whose reputation and fertile imagination seems to grow larger every passing day. Less baroque than 'Armchair' but more relaxed and pastoral - this record is still stuffed full of beauty and charm. VERY RECOMMENDED!!! This deluxe 2 disc edition features an additional album of instrumental tracks, very different from 'Noble Beast' and with WILCO's Glenn Kotche.

ARMCHAIR APOCRYPHA (180g)
FAT POSSUM
Local hero ANDREW BIRD returns with his 2007 release. Having hooked up creatively with DOSH just after the release of The Mysterious Production of Eggs, BIRD seems to have a new spring in his step. With DOSH on drums, BIRD has moved a little away from Eggs' slightly depressing tone with a few more up-beat tracks, but BIRD's violin is still as prevelant as ever, so well placed that it doesn't seem flagrant whatsoever. Same with his trademark whistling: pitch-perfect and perfectly integrated into his songs, every instrument speaks its piece and steps aside to allow the song's natural progression to occur. For those not in the know, ANDREW BIRD could possibly be this generation's best songwriter. RECOMMENDED!
