RUSSELL, ARTHUR
CALLING OUT OF CONTEXT
Audika
Yes, perhaps the Soul Jazz collection "World Of Arthur Russell" was not for people ready to go back to the Garage or the Loft, with its steady concentration of disco cuts. However, this new collection on AUDIKA is just another world of RUSSELL's vast work. Here are 12 tracks never before released (coming from two scrapped albums, "Corn" and another for Rough Trade, that RUSSELL could not finish at the time of passing in 1992). This is the bridge between his "World of Echo" album and say "In the Light of The Miracle" single; there's beats that are dancey at points, but the focus on cello and voice here are so somber and depressing that its hypnotic detail and emotional release make it one of the saddest records ever recorded (especially when you take into account the last months of Russell's life). Once again, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

RUSSELL, ARTHUR
FIRST THOUGHT BEST THOUGHT (2CD)
AUDIKA
With each release of ARTHUR RUSSELL's recordings, we catch a different angle of Russell's thought process. "First Thought Best Thought" collects two sets of live recordings from NYC's Kitchen, featuring many of Russell's frequent collaboratiors (Ernie Brooks, Peter Zummo, Rhys Catham, and Peter Gordon to name a few) creating soft elegant avant-chamber-pop. Elsewhere, there are dueling Fender Rhodes on "Reach One", a full orchestral arrangement on the lulling "Tower Of Meaning" and a tone generator slugs on the floor of a tugboat on "Sketch For The Face Of Helen." Another unique and interesting look into Russell's dense imagination. On AUDIKA and RECOMMENDED!!

RUSSELL, ARTHUR
IOWA DREAM
Audika
'Iowa Dream' is a collection of demos from ARTHUR RUSSELL, which are very straightforward and disarming. Simple, direct songs that are tender and minimalistic, with an emotional depth and playfulness. Joining RUSSELL here are ERNIE BROOKS, RHYS CHATHAM, HENRY FLYNT and JON GIBSON. Simultaneously heartbreaking and breezy, in just the right way. A revelatory album.

RUSSELL, ARTHUR
SPRINGFIELD
AUDIKARECO
"Springfield" is one of the last compositions that Arthur Russell created in his too short life. Until now, the tapes (over 4 hours worth) had gone unfinished. Thankfully DFA was up to the challenge of mixing & finishing the track. Along with a master take, a DFA remix in included along with an edit. Also included on this cd are 4 songs from an unfinished album. 40 more minutes of proof that Arthur Russell was a true visionary in the realm of electronic/dance pop.

RUSSELL, ARTHUR
WORLD OF ARTHUR RUSSELL (IMP)
SOUL JAZZ
Finally, after months of talk and speculation SOUL JAZZ releases the first (in what will most likely be several, on other labels) overview into the work of ARTHUR RUSSELL. Born in Iowa, he moved to New York and began studying Cello at the Manhattan School of Music (this, after a brief stint at The SF Conservatory of Music). Soon after moving to NYC, he became entranced with the Disco music that was being played in clubs like the Paradise Garage and the Gallery. This transition from the Avant Garde teachings he picked up at the Conservatory and his new found love for Disco-funk led Russell to start releasing various 12"s under tons of psuedonyms (Dinosaur L, Lola, Indian Ocean, and Loose Joints to name a few). What's captured here is dance music that doesn't sound dated; rhythms and melodys that are in tune with Russell's Buddhist leanings, and his love for the avant-garde, and Eastern musics. Its infectious and insidious... one of the greatest mythical figures in the last 30 years of music. Features mixes by: LARRY LEVAN, WALTER GIBBONS, and FRANCOIS KEVORKIAN. This is HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

RUSSELL, ARTHUR
WORLD OF ECHO (2LP,REISSUE) (W/BONUS TRACKS)
Audika
YESS!!! Available once again on LP, "World Of Echo" is ARTHUR RUSSELL at his most stark, depressing, and introspective. Employing only his voice, his cello, and echoboxes, Russell transforms his pop and dance numbers into decaying mantras where the rhythm is a ghost and the soul hangs in the air only to be sucked up by the desperation of 80's Manhattan. In short, this is a fucking godsend, and if you add on four bonus tracks, then it just makes eternity burn a little brighter. 100% APPROVED!!!
