Announced less than a week before its release, this 2023 album from indie stalwarts BELLE AND SEBASTIAN was tracked during the same sessions as 2022's "A Bit of Previous" and features songs from B&S's near thirty year long back catalogue. The music here taps into the more upbeat side of their discography, incorporating synths, harpsichord and other keys to both bolster and substitute the band's guitar-oriented songwriting. BELLE & SEBASTIAN's score to Todd Solondz's most socially crippled and quite angry film to date. The rigorous fandamonium that BELLE & SEBASTIAN have built their career from is in full swing on this record. They seem to take abit from all their favorite soundtracks and TV shows. For years they've spoke of the influence stemed from the theme to the BBC program "White Horses". Here they take that same placid bubblegum pop and spike it with dark wit and sarcasim. The lyrics are based very much on the stories from the film the way their song "Slow Graffitti" did on the "Acid House" soundtrack. With clear bits of Burt Bacharach, Krzysztof Komeda, Ennio Morricone and even Mark Mothersbaugh showing their face. The albums title tarck sounds very similar to The KINKS "Percy" soundtrack. It's a brilliant summation of the film itself. A clever soundtrack to a clever film by clever people. What was going on behind that red square anyway....oh yeah, I guess that makes sense.RECOMMENDED

It's not easy being GREG DULLI; after being frontman for one of the best bands to come out of SUB POP's zenith days (the mighty AFGHAN WHIGS) the band seperated, and DULLI went into a drug induced dellusional state, only to land in a psychiatric ward. What came out of his stay was the TWILGHT SINGERS--a project he started during the WHIGS period with Howlin' Maggie member HAROLD CHICHESTER, and SHAWN SMITH (Brad) which morphed into a post-Whigs endeavor with UK dance group FILA BRAZILLIA. The result was a soulful, make-out record. A sort of come-down from the rauccous emotional haze that the WHIGS would inspire. Okay. Caught up? For the second TWILIGHT SINGERS record, Dulli has has returned to his rock roots, but still maintaining the soft approach. Horns have been added, more guitars, and production that could easily have been used for an Adult Contemporary album (think Matrix) but with Dulli's dark side of the street lyrics, it makes for a very dark and haunting tale of love, lust, religion, and pain. The latest in the Zorn Filmworks series, and the third soundtrack released in 2008. The scores for these two movies (one a French S&M piece of erotica and the other a documentary on the renovation of an Amsterdam museum) range from the gentle Baroque minimalism to a playful, world fusion vibe. These are a long way from the Zorn you think you know, but no less unique in their charm.

Fun and weird early 2000s French animated film worth checking out, especially for this price.
