CALLAHAN, BILL
GOLD RECORD
Drag City
Just a little over a year after 2019's excellent "Shepard in a Sheepskin Vest", Bill Callahan is back with the aptly titled "Gold Record". This time around Bill brings in even more colorful instrumentation & an expanded musical vocabulary- with mariachi trumpets & guitars, even cowboy whistles shifting in & out of focus to a near psychedelic effect. Every song has a story to tell, with Callahan's free-wheelin' & wry vocals reminding us of the great storytellers like TERRY ALLEN & KRIS KRISTOFFERSON. The record also contains some 'gold' Callahan lyrics, including "it's almost beer-thirty", "...with eyes like honey-drunk bees", & of course the introductory line, "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". As always, on Drag City & recommended!

CALLAHAN, BILL
SHEPHERD IN A SHEEPSKIN VEST
Drag City
Bill Callahan's 2019 album opens with what sounds like a recording made on a handheld cassette recorder. The lo-fi recording is a reminder of Bill's early days as SMOG & then very cleverly, the song switches to a more hi-fi sound that feels like acceptance, not necessarily erasing the past, but acknowledging it & being content with NOW. In a number of interviews Callahan discusses settling down with his wife, having a child & living a peaceful life. Callahan seems content & that permeates through this record & it's incredibly refreshing. RECOMMENDED.

DREAM RIVER
Drag City
According to Drag City, "Dream River" is the "a sweet sequel" to "Sometimes I Wish I Were An Eagle." Sweet is a good word to describe it but you could replace that with 'chill' or 'mellow' if you wanted to as that's certainly the case here. Callahan's voice is way up front & sounds almost hypnotic, guiding you through the song wilderness like a calm river. There's also a real 'hippie' vibe this time around, with plenty of new-agey flutes & bongos & reminders of the 60's Laurel Canyon scene. Callahan has never disappointed us in the past & he succeeds once again with "Dream River."

WOKE ON A WHALEHEART
Drag City
For "Woke on a Whaleheart", Bill Callahan has made a few major steps forward. First of all, he's shed the SMOG name (at least for now), secondly, the guest musicians play a much more important role than on any other Callahan related release to date including ROYAL TRUX guitarist Neil Michael Hagerty who shares arrangement credits with Mr. Bill. That dark & clever wit that we've come to know & love is still there but there are elements of hope & all-around positivity to this record that really set it apart from SMOG records. Perhaps that's why Callahan chose this record as the first one to officially bear his name.
