BELONG
COMMON ERA
Kranky
It's been a long five years since "October Language" for the New Orleans duo of Turk Dietrich & Michael Jones aka BELONG & the group has made some significant changes to their sound during that time. We didn't realize it then but their 2008 e.p. of covers called "Colorless Record" was a little hint at what was to come on their 2011 Kranky debut. The biggest chance is of course the addition of drums & vocals. The washy drones & ambience are still prevalent but now they exist as a comfortable bed for the minimalist, almost dark-wave songs to lie on. The first thing that came to our mind when we heard this was "Faith" & "Pornography" era CURE drenched in lo-fi mellotron string drones with ancient sounding drum machines & vocals barely peaking through. In a way, "Common Era" is almost like the perfect middle ground between the other 2011 Kranky releases to this point, DISAPPEARS' "Guider" & Tim Hecker's "Ravedeath, 1972" & will certainly end up on many of our employees' best of lists for the year.

ELECTRIC CIRCUS (EXPLICIT, ENHANCED)
MCA
Another amazing record from Chicago's own COMMON. This one was recorded at Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland Studios, and features a wide range of guests. ?UESTLOVE, CEE-LO, MARY J. BLIGE, NEPTUNES PRINCE, LATECIA SAIDER (STEREOLAB), and more drop by on this one. R E C O M M E N D E D ! ! ! ! ! !

COMMON
FINDING FOREVER (EXPLICIT)
GEFFEN
2007 brings the seventh (!) album from Chicago- born COMMON. Much like 2005's "Be," COMMON teams up mostly with KANYE WEST behind the boards (with assistance from WILL.I.AM, J DILLA (RIP), & DEVO SPRINGSTEEN). And, once again, this album has songs ranging from total club bangers to more heartfelt, instrospective jams. COMMON puts off this air of being some sort of hip-hop deity that's here to help save the game from itself, but he's mortal (he walked past me at a show once), for sure, and has plenty of human touches to his lyrics that keep him grounded. Say what you will about COMMON's resurrection (no pun intended) at the hands of fellow Chicago-guy KANYE WEST, but he's helped take COMMON from decent backpacker to superstar, and the confidence in this step shows in his music. RECOMMENDED!!!

COMMON
LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE
MCA
Possibly the best COMMON album? I think so. Tons of production by JAY DEE (R.I.P.), ex produced by THE ROOT's ?UESTLOVE. Featuring JILL SCOTT, FEMI KUTI, CEE LO GREEN, SLUM VILLAGE, D'ANGELO & many, many others. From 1999, soul sample grooves aplenty. THE LIGHT outshines I USED TO LOVE H.E.R. One of the finest moments in hip hop.

COMMON
NOBODY'S SMILING
DEFJAM
2014 album from COMMON is a more somber album, overall, NO ID's production dark & sorta minimal a lot of the time. A lot of the beats remind us of SHABAZZ PALACES or CLIPPING, & there's nothing super soulful on "Nobody's Smiling" save for the track "Real." A bit of a departure for COMMON but a breath of fresh air.

UNIVERSAL MIND CONTROL
GEFFEN
2008 hotly-anticipated release from Chitown fave COMMON, and it does not disappoint. Both Pharrell and Kanye have had their hands in this record, so you know it has slamming beats and a futuristic sound - this is seriously some of Common's best stuff in a long time, and it's going to get stuck in your player and head. Instant classic! Also check out CEE-LO on track 3 - it's like a lost GNARLS BARKLEY track! You need this - RECOMMENDED!

COMMON HOLLY
WHEN I SAY TO YOU BLACK LIGHTNING
Barsuk
Montreal's Brigitte Naggar makes knotty, ethereal folk under the moniker COMMON HOLLY. The rhythm section is particularly strong here, supporting the arrangement of synth and strings and giving grounding to Naggar's more confessional songs.

FUCKED UP
CHEMISTRY OF COMMON LIFE
MATADOR
2008 skullpunch from FUCKED UP, one of the most inventive and ground-breaking punk bands out there. Consistently intense and pushing many boundaries of the genre, this band just cannot be stopped. From flutes and French horns to ear-splitting feedback and throat-rending screams and all point in-between, this record will knock you on your ass. TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY RECOMMENDED!!!

HORSE LORDS
COMMON TASK
Northern Spy
First album for Baltimore's HORSE LORDS since 2016's "Interventions" and this one's a doozy. Avant-garde, polyrhythmic rock mutations that owes as much to the classical minimalists of the late 20th Century (STEVE REICH, PHILIP GLASS, LA MONTE YOUNG etc.) as to psych- prog outfits like HAWKWIND or KING CRIMSON and even to free jazz composers like PETER BROTZMANN and ALBERT AYLER. "The Common Task" is rooted in a radical left utopian vision, liberating the mind by liberating the body to move. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
