FLYING LOTUS
FLAMAGRA
Warp
The first piece of Steve Ellison, aka FLYING LOTUS's, sixth album arrived in the form of a collaboration with David Lynch. Five years between 2014's "You're Dead!" and now, and we get a surreal video directed and narrated by Lynch of an interlude that appears halfway thru the record, aptly titled "Fire is Coming". Since then, the pieces of "Flamagra" that have been revealed to the public - both intentional and unintentional - have continued the motif of fire, both in it's calm and fury. Smoky layers of bass and synth cover the album's quieter moments, making way for it's more intense and nimble segments, all the while retaining it's groovy, "in the pocket" sensibility. Ellison deftly maneuvers these changes by bringing a large list of collaborators into the fold that each compliment the album's varying tones. There's no space to list everyone, but GEORGE CLINTON, THUNDERCAT, SOLANGE, HERBIE HANCOCK, ANDERSON .PAAK and DENZEL CURRY all make contributions, and at every point their presence is intuitively purposeful. FLYING LOTUS's music has always incorporated hip-hop, jazz, funk and electronica into a unified sound that demonstrates the styles' shared lineage of influence. That blend has never felt more cohesive than here on "Flamagra". VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

FLYING LOTUS
COSMOGRAMMA (2LP, 180g, GATEFOLD)
Warp
Los Angeles' Steve Ellison, aka Flying Lotus, releases his hotly anticipated third full-length and features some big names in electronic music such as mixed media provocateurs Thundercat (of Sa-Ra), Laura Darlington and Thom Yorke. It should be kept in mind that in addition to being independently creative, Ellison is also the great nephew of Alice Coltrane (wife of the legendary John Coltrane and an amazing musician in her own right). Seemingly, the Coltrane connection explains Flying Lotus' organic obsessions. Stretching his genres possibilities, "Cosmogramma" also features live instrumentation (i.e. Rebekah Raff on harp and cousin Ravi Coltrane on tenor sax) in addition to a blistering array of crisp electronic production. There is a little bit of everything here, even arrangements by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (who has worked with Outkast and Erykah Badu). This album could not be anymore talked about in electronic music circles garnering the, deservedly, HYPED HYPED HYPED award of 2010. Fans of Fourtet, Caribou, and Squarepusher will definitely enjoy the J Dilla-esque texture and Jagga Jazzist atmosphere. On Warp Records.

FLYING LOTUS
LOS ANGELES (IMP, 2LP)
Warp
FLYING LOTUS (aka Steven Ellison) garnered praise for his 1983 ep (released in 2006) on Plug Research and his bumper for ADULT SWIM on the cartoon network. This full-length debut on Warp is a dense tapestry of instrumental ear-candy. This is ostensibly hip hop instrumental work, but it stays abstract and very pleasantly dreamy. There's even a duet with his great aunt, ALICE COLTRANE. FANTASTIC!!!

FLYING LOTUS
UNTIL THE QUIET COMES (2LP)
Warp
Mesmerizing fourth album from FLYING LOTUS really gets this (mostly) instrumental dance/hip-hop/whatever you want to call it down pat. In fact, that's one of the best things about FLYING LOTUS, is that his music is so enjoyable outside of standard genre limitations. There's definitely a strong hip-hop influence in the drums, but the surrounding sounds, instruments & vocals (help from ERYKAH BADU, THOM YORKE & THUNDERCAT on this album) stretch this into its own world. Some of the songs on this album are pretty out-there, so if you're looking for a straightforward listening experience, this isn't it. Otherwise, you know we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this title. GET IT!

YOU'RE DEAD! (2LP) (W/ DOWNLOAD)
Warp
Fifth album from electronic-music mastermind FLYING LOTUS is about as close as we're going to get to a living, breathing SUN RA these days & FLYING LOTUS seems to be carrying that torch proudly. This album cruises by in about 40 minutes & is a mixture of free jazz, hip-hop/grime & soul. Lots of bass, lots of layers, lots of GOOD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
