GRIZZLY BEAR
PAINTED RUINS
RCA
GRIZZLY BEAR returns after a 5 year hiatus with the impressive album "Bear Painted Ruins." During that time the majority of the group has found themselves scattered somewhat geographically but according to the band they've made their most democratic record yet. The lush songwriting & production of Brian Wilson has always been a major influence for these guys & that's still prominent but it's clear that these guys are masterful arrangers, players & producers themselves. The album has a massive sound to it with sounds that remind us of David Axelrod, Brian Wilson & even Morriconne at times. Strings & horns are well placed & give the complex indie rock songs quite a bit of weight. Another fantastic record from this talented group.
Available at: Belmont
Used CD $7.99

GRIZZLY BEAR
VECKATIMEST
WARP
Veckatimest, named after a tiny island on Cape Cod, is an extremely collaborative effort considering how busy each band member has been since the release of "Yellow House" (2006). Tours with Radiohead, TV On The Radio, and Feist, the highly acclaimed album release of Daniel Rossen's other group Department Of Eagles, and releasing singles and EP's should have kept this album from happening in a timely fashion. However, here it is. Twelve songs of folk-pop with amazing orchestrations by Nico Muhly (if you haven't heard of this guy yet, look him up!!!), and guest backing vocals by Victoria LeGrand of Beach House on the track entitled "Two Weeks." Frankly, this album probably did not even need a description. Grizzly Bear's star has been rising since "Horn Of Plenty" was released in 2004. However, for our fashionably late listeners, if you enjoy Bon Iver, Panda Bear, or the Beach Boys you will like this with 99.9999% certainty. On Warp Records.

GRIZZLY BEAR
SHIELDS (2LP, 180g)
Warp
"Shields" is Grizzly Bear's fourth album and it seems like a middle ground between the "Horn of Plenty" and the ambitious "Veckatimest" albums. Artist develop and evolve and this album will be sought out and defined as the "one you can listen to start to finish" uninterrupted. Chris Taylor and Daniel Rossen (also of Department of Eagles) must have reveled in their studio time and have to create something less 'pop' and something more progressive. Swirling guitar riffs are supported by steady drumming and properly placed vocal harmonies highlight the entire concoction. We dare compare this music to the sacred canticles of Jeff Buckley but also see similarities contemporary groups like Beirut or Band of Horses.
