LOTTA SEA LICE (CENTER GATEFOLD SLEEVE)
MATADOR
When we first heard wind of this collab between the most lazy seeming not lazy guy Kurt Vile & the energetic Aussie wordsmith Courtney Barnett the first thought was "Well duh, of course they should do an album together!" A meeting of minds like this COULD go really bad but it doesn't, in fact this is just as good as you'd probably hope for. Vile & Barnett's back & forths make perfect sense & their styles blend together effortlessly. With help from THE DIRTY THREE'S Jim White & Mick Turner & WARSAW's Stella Mozgawa & few others, Kurt & Courtney (how did we only notice this now!) have given as a true gift. RECOMMENDED.

B'LIEVE I'M GOIN (DEEP) DOWN (3LP)
(LTD. EDITION W/ INSERT OUT OF PRINT)
MATADOR
Over the past decade or so, Philadelphia's Kurt Vile has emerged as one of America's best & most prolific songwriters. Not too bad for a "slacker" eh? On "B'lieve I'm Goin Down", Vile continues to rise as a songwriter & his lyrics have never been more clever. There's A LOT less reverb on this record & the songs have a more direct feel with some heavily featured organ & even a little banjo. The last album "Wakin..." was pretty warm & summery but this one definitely has a more insular & slightly darker feel to it. Kurt keeps plowing ahead, hurtling through space & we're going to keep hanging on for the ride. RECOMMENDED. Limited edition "B'lieve I'm Goin (Deep) Down" 3LP version with 4 extra songs & some instrumentals of the album tracks, an extra gatefold-out & a poster. NOICE!

GOD IS SAYING THIS TO YOU
Mexican Summer
"God Is Saying This To You" is a compilation of tracks from "Overnite KV," a tour only CDR made to correlate with Vile's European tour under his The War on Drugs persona, and a handful of extra tracks recorded specifically for this 2009 collection. This album is great accompaniment to his other two jammers "Constant Hitmaker" and the EP "The Hunchback." Possibly a bit more mellow, this is still definately worth a listen! On Mexican Summer Records, limited to 500 copies, and includes a free download of the album!

WAKIN ON A PRETTY DAZE (2LPS)
MATADOR
Nobody does 'lazy' better than Kurt Vile and the vibe on his third Matador album is about as laid back as they come. Now obviously we're not saying Kurt is a slacker, he & his band The Violators have been incredibly busy recording & touring the past few years, but everything about Kurt from his lyrics, vocal delivery, song tempos & even his look emphasize chilling out. The album opens with the title track, an almost 10 minute epic with K.V. & the band doing what they do best, mellowed-out rocking with long guitar solo passages & Vile's stoned outlook on life (We must note here that Vile claims not to 'never, as they say, touch the stuff' on "Goldtone"). "Pure Pain" is the ultimate road song about missing his wife while on tour & there's a lyric about hanging out with MOON DUO that makes us smile. The main riff on "KV CRIMES" sounds like a mix of "The Loner" & "Cinnamon Girl" & we wonder if you'll have as much trouble getting it out of your head as we've had. Everything on "Wakin..." flows effortlessly & Kurt perhaps sums this up best with confidence on "Was All Talk", "makin music is easy, watch me." Another great album from Kurt Vile & the Violators.

WATCH MY MOVES (2LP)
Verve
Philly's Kurt Vile makes his major label debut on Verve with "(Watch My Moves.)" Aside from switching labels & getting older, not much has changed. Vile is still the hardest working slacker out there & he's still writing great songs. This album was mostly recorded at home but it has a big studio sound. We're just glad that one of our favorite artists is still out there plugging away. RECOMMENDED.
