LOTTA SEA LICE
MATADOR
When we first heard wind of this collab between the most lazy seeming not lazy guy Kurt Vile & the energetic Aussie wordsmith Courtney Barnett the first thought was "Well duh, of course they should do an album together!" A meeting of minds like this COULD go really bad but it doesn't, in fact this is just as good as you'd probably hope for. Vile & Barnett's back & forths make perfect sense & their styles blend together effortlessly. With help from THE DIRTY THREE'S Jim White & Mick Turner & WARSAW's Stella Mozgawa & few others, Kurt & Courtney (how did we only notice this now!) have given as a true gift. RECOMMENDED.

BOTTLE IT IN
MATADOR
The reliable Kurt Vile keeps churnin' em out. On "Bottle it In" Kurt & the band seem to be drifting with many of the songs featuring lengthy guitar solos & Vile's now trademark stream of consciousness/totally chilled out lyrics that ramble on in that way we all love so much. The song "Pretty Pimpin'" from the previous album was a legit hit & perhaps he's pulled back a bit from that idea. That's not to say they're aren't "hits" here, it just doesn't seem to be the primary concern. Either way, Kurt Vile found a groove awhile back that he still seems to be comfortable floating in for awhile & we're fine with that. RECOMMENDED.

SMOKE RING FOR MY HALO
MATADOR
There's no doubt that Philadelphia's Kurt Vile is a hard worker. Over the past few years he's released albums & singles consistently & it seems like he plays in Chicago every few months. "Smoke Ring for my Halo" is more restrained than "Childish Prodigy" & more closely resembles "Constant Hitmaker" with its lo-fi Neil Young-isms & fingerstyle playing. We're not saying that there aren't any rockers here, but the album does have an overall chill, stoner vibe. We're not surprised at all by Kurt's quick ascent & we can't wait to hear what he comes up with next.

SPEED, SOUND, LONELY KV (EP)
Matador
Kurt Vile steps out a bit on this EP. Recorded at the legendary Butcher Shoppe over the course of a few years whenever he was in Nashville, this EP features a duet of John Prine & Kurt doing Prine's "How Lucky" & it's pretty darn special. There's also a cover of Prine's "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" & two new great original Kurt tunes. RECOMMENDED.

SQUARE SHELLS EP (REISSUE, COLOR VINYL)
Matador
Philadelphia singer-songwriter Kurt Vile drops this EP foreshadowing his upcoming release recorded with John Agnello (The Hold Steady, Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth) called "Sqaure Shells." Reflecting on a more modest approach to songwriting, there is a lot of space in these compositions allowing Vile's acoustic guitar work and sparse vocals to hang in the ether of the subdued electronic soundscape. Lo-fi drum machine sounds snap and pop out the rhythm, ambient fuzz fills the white space, and small electronic flourishes keep you guessing to what direction Vile is going to go next. "Square Shells" confronts the hurdle of making an album featuring different genres from song to song and gets our approval. There is a little Neu, Leonard Cohen, ambient-loner composer vibes, and even some Lee Hazelwood-isms here that should not disappoint fans of Vile's previous output. Take a listen...
