MUCHACHO
DEADOCEANS
2013 album from Matthew Houck aka PHOSPHORESCENT. Houck has created a pretty lazy, sunny vibe this time around. Nothing really sounds overworked or fretted over. The central focus is (as it should be) Houck's voice which is fragile & at times rather imperfect sounding but like the best rock n' rollers, he uses those imperfections to his advantage. There's an authentic 70's country vibe here, something that many artists wish they could convey, even just a little bit. Think Townes Van Zandt, Bill Fay, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy etc... A very solid album.

PRIDE
DEADOCEANS
Matthew Houck aka PHOPHORESCENT moved from Atlanta to Brooklyn halfway through the making of the 2007 album "Pride." We're not sure if that move influenced the final results but this album is probably the most different sounding PHOSPHORESCENT album to date. The songs are mostly haunting folk songs with sparse arrangements & choral vocal accompaniment sort of like "Our Prayer" by the BEACH BOYS. If you like this, check out the Yeasayer album "All Hour Cymbals" coincidentally released on the same day.

TO WILLIE
DEADOCEANS
PHOSPHORESCENT's Matthew Houck pays the ulimate homage to one of heroes with "To Willie" an album of Willie Nelson covers. The brilliant thing about this album that many artists would have difficulty achieving is that Houck's sound is all over this album. The songs seem to glow with joy, the joy of Houck playing the songs of one of his favorite artists. There's a wistfulness to his approach that is impossible to overlook. PHOSPHORESCENT fans will love this & so will fans of Willie & if you like 60's & 70's country music or stuff like early PALACE BROTHERS, SILVER JEWS etc...then you should get this.
