QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
LIKE CLOCKWORK (W/ SLIPCASE)
Matador
2013 & first album in six years from Cali's QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. These guys have been carrying the Rock Torch alongside very few other bands like FOO FIGHTERS or PEARL JAM, who have been unrelenting in their respective quests to move "rock" music forward. This album must reflect the six years between "Era Vulgaris" & now because there's a lot of different feels (all of them slightly trashy & sunbaked as is QOTSA's wont) from super-hard rockers to the brooding opening track. Oh, & the homies they've got adding a little flavor here & there are not to be messed with: TRENT REZNOR, estranged QOTSA member NICK OLIVERI, DAVE GROHL, ELTON JOHN (seriously), MARK LANEGAN & BRODY DALLE. We guess this means it's officially summer, right? Open some windows & toss this on!
Available at: Milwaukee Ave.
New CD $12.99

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
LULLABIES TO PARALYZE (EXPLICIT)
INTERSCOPE
With the departure of NICK OLIVERI, the question rings "Can Josh Homme go it alone?" While "Lullabies..." does lack the initial wallop of "Songs For The Deaf," the insidious sneakiness of "Rated R," it does maintain the minimalist sexy swagger of the first release. There are moments when Homme sounds like he's trying to do a Prince impression over a desert punk band, but it kind of works. There are re-workings of DESSERT SESSIONS songs, and in the end he's pulled it off. If this is his weakest moment, then he's still running circles around 500 other bands on the radio today. Features some help from MARK LANNEGAN, SHIRLEY MANSON, BRODE DALLE, and BILLY GIBBONS (ZZ TOP)
Available at: Broadway and Milwaukee Ave.

QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
VILLAINS
Matador
If any of you had concerns about what Mark Ronson's influence on a QOTSA record might be like, we're here to tell you to stop worrying. Sure, "Villains" sounds pretty damn slick but the swagger & attitude isn't lost one bit. In some ways, this is actually a somewhat logical progression for these guys. There are some great tones on here, especially the guitars which sound weird (in a good way) a lot of the times. This has a 70's, big studio sound to it, i.e. it sounds like it cost a lot of money to make & we'd imagine that it did. Fans of Josh & the band are gonna be psyched on this.
