LOVE THIS GIANT
4AD
Expectations for high-profile collaborations like this are rarely met (see 'Lulu' though we admit some people on our staff like that one) but we have to say that this one does work. The singers mostly sing solo except for backing each other up with harmonies. The first thing that came to mind while listening to this was Kate Bush & Peter Gabriel's 80's teamwork & maybe even a little B-52s. There's a lot of horns on the record sounding like everything from chamber music to BJORK or even some of Philip Glass' soundtrack work. The album supposedly took 3 years to complete & it sounds like it was worth the effort to us.
Available at: Milwaukee Ave
Used CD $4.99

ST. VINCENT
MARRY ME
BEGGARSBAN
ST. VINCENT is the project of Brooklynite ANNIE CLARK, who has played guitar in the POLYPHONIC SPREE and with SUFJAN STEVENS' touring outfit. Her guitar playing is augmented with her excellent soprano voice and tasteful beats. There's horns, piano and all sorts of other nice instruments, and it all maintains a cool, cohesive feel. Nice and smooth.

MASSEDUCATION MASS EDUCATION
Loma Vista
After ST. VINCENT's fantastic, technicolor 2017 release MASSEDUCTION, rumours were abound of a stripped, acoustic version previously mentioned in an interview & if it would ever be released... well, here we are! A complete reimagining, titled MASSEDUCATION (one letter makes all the difference), strips the sheen from the tracks and brings the raw emotion to the forefront, showcasing Annie Clark's fantastic songwriting backed only by piano. What once was a personal record masquerading as a pop monolith has become a shimmering & disarming collection of pure beauty. RECOMMENDED!!
Available at: Belmont and Milwaukee Ave
New CD $13.99

ST. VINCENT
LOMA VISTA
Fourth (first for major label Lorna Vista) Annie Clark as ST VINCENT album is about as personal & open as we've heard her before. There's the weird pop quality present in all her music, but here theres a feeling of welcome underneath the buzz & rattle that makes this the most accessible music she's yet released.
Available at: Milwaukee Ave
Used CD $6.99

ST. VINCENT
STRANGER MERCY (LTD. EDITION) :(W/ BONUS DVD & SLIPCASE)
4AD
2011 release from avant-chanteuse Annie Clark, furthering her catalog of hummable pop tunes married to fucked up guitar shredding and baroque arrangements. This record concentrates more on the song, even though there are some squiggly analog synths and damaged amp noise counter-melodies. This album is full of great tracks and equally great sounds - beautifully recorded, played, arranged and written. If you need some references, try KATE BUSH, TORI AMOS, SUFJAN STEVENS, JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN, FIONA APPLE, ERIC MATTHEWS, ELLIOTT SMITH, etc. This deluxe edition comes with a bonus DVD featuring videos for "Cruel" & "Cheerleader" & a 5 song 4AD session recorded in NYC in Sept. 2011.

ACTOR (W/ DOWNLOAD)
4AD
Second album from ST. VINCENT (aka ANNIE CLARK), who was once a part of SUFJAN STEVENS' touring band as well as the POLYPHONIC SPREE. "Actor" continues on from "Marry Me" with her stunningly- pretty vocals, nice guitar work, & all sorts of other do-dads making noise (what sounds like drums, synths, & who knows what else) that all tie together nicely. Just a great, modern pop record. On 4AD.
