THESE NEW PURITANS
HIDDEN [MMXX] (2LP, w/ BONUS TRACKS)
(10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
Domino
10th anniversary of this killer record from THESE NEW PURITANS, featuring six bonus tracks of both unreleased and live material. Here's what we had to say in 2010: This English quartet, including brothers Jack and George Barnett, has evolved from their modest Wire/Fall worship to something extremely lush and provocative. Like other contemporary luminaries, take Final Fantasy's Owen Pallet, Nico Muhly, or even Sufjan Stevens recent output, it would seem that 20th century composers and compositions have taken the place of the usual popular influences and inspired an interesting blend of chamber rock. Co-produced by former Bark Psychosis frontman Graham Sutton, "Hidden" would sit comfortably next to your Thom Yorke or Steve Reich albums. The closing track, "5," sounds the most like something Reich would have penned and is a fine homage to the albums lofty ambitions. On Domino Records
