Here's what we had to say about it when it came out back in 2007: NOAH LENNOX (of ANIMAL COLLECTIVE fame) returns with his third solo release. This album replaces some of the acoustic elements of previous albums and introduces some samplers & electronics. Full of texture & synthesized sounds this album is a playful addition to LENNOX's busy arrangements. An album that would surely make BRIAN WILSON proud,as it is non-stop,beautiful vocal harmonies. No lush/orchestral pop fan should be without this one! HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!!

Panda Bear's third full-length album follows a handful of singles and 12" releases meant to hold fans over until its release. The singles "Surfer's Hymn" and "Tomboy" are contained here and as we have come to expect and grown to love, there are more Beach Boys-harmonies, various spare electronics, and Animal Collective cacophony. Mixed with Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember (Spectrum/Spacemen 3) this is not a huge departure from Lennox's latter work, but it is just as good as 2007s Person Pitch.

Over five records and a decade-plus, Detroit's own PROTOMARTYR has been a model for consistency. Album six is no exception, expanding their sonic palette to include icy gothic synth textures and guitar sheet noise to abstract (but not obscure) the band's classic rhythmic jitters and earworm lead-lines. All these are tied together by Joe Casey's apocalyptic sermon vocals which continue to deliver without landing on cliche sloganeering. One of the best bands working today. On Domino and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Since their inception twelve years ago, Detroit's own native sons PROTOMARTYR have always channeled the profound anguish of alienation, both interpersonal and institutional. 2017's "Relatives In Descent" shot that alienation through the lens of American life at large, exploring the winnowing of opportunity laid bare after the 2016 election. Now, when those themes could not be more clear, PROTOMARTYR builds upon them on "Ultimate Success Today". The band's signature rhythmic punk and washed out crescendos continue to get larger, punchier and more poignant, supporting the weight of the lyrics with grace. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The Domino Records debut for the New Jersey band REAL ESTATE is one of those 'statement' records. Normally you might think that would mean something grandiose like say M83's "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming" (which came out on the same day we should note), instead "Days" is almost as minimal as it can be with no glitz & glammer, just an album of really good songs. The album is effortless sounding, something which most bands try so hard to achieve but rarely do. The album has a really 'chill' vibe reminding us of some of our FEELIES, REM, FELT, TELEVISION (mellow songs that is) etc... If you already know REAL ESTATE then you're going to buy this already but this is a perfect place to start if you're just getting into them.
