Debut album from NORAH JONES finds the artist in quite of a descriptive pickle. Yes, she is on Blue Note records and her voice is obviously influenced by jazz singers like BILLIE HOLIDAY, and DINAH WASHINGTON. At the same time, though it seems that she is equally influenced (musically speaking) by EMMYLOU HARRIS and JONI MITCHELL. The arrangements that are draped behind this young womans smokey voice are ones that ebb and flow between dust-like country, jazz and pop. At any rate it's a gorgeous debut, and there's most likely more to come from this new voice. Day Breaks is in some ways a return to Jones' debut, but it's also the feeling of a new thing. Something you feel almost completely at home with right away, like it's always been there, even on your first listen.

Norah Jones returns with her second effort for Blue Note records after winning like 1,000,000,000 grammy awards for her debut record. Norah hasn't messed with her formula much for the 2nd record, but fans will not be dissapointed with this record. Features her take on Townes Van Zandt's "Be Here to Love Me", Tom Waits' "Long Way Home" & a re-working of Duke Ellington's "Melancholia" w/ new lyrics by Norah. Her simple approach to these songs & her originals are a refreshing in this era of pitchfixing & obnoxious over production. Overall, an excellent follow up & proof that Norah Jones is the real deal.

With the help of producer DANGER MOUSE, NORAH JONES injects her tuneful jazz pop with fuzz, psych, and trip-hop, coming on like a cross between Dusty Springfield and The Black Keys. To paraphrase Neil Young, this is Norah's "Ditch" album. Recommended.

Back in 2005, Rickie Lee Jones was asked to participate in a spoken word project based on a book by her friend Lee Cantelon which studied the words of Jesus Christ & how they've been reinterpreted over the years. Jones was so pleased with the results of "Nobody Knows My Name" (the first song) that she decided to create an entire record around it. This is a nice addition to her back catalogue of somewhat country rock. This deluxe edition comes with a bonus DVD featuring a high fidelity 256kbps version of the album (which we think is a fancy way of saying that this is a high quality version for MP3 players??) & some video clips.

There just aren't that many artists out there that we would praise for sounding this 'retro.' Seriously, it's just insane that this record isn't a lost Motown or Stax gem. "Naturally" was & still is a Reckless favorite & this record is going to be one for a long time too. The music on "100 Days 100 Nights" is more stripped down & less upbeat & funky. Instead of a Supremes 'pop' style, Jones seems to be going for a bluesier, raw soul sound this time around. Her voice sounds gravelly at the right times & smooth as butter at others. The Dap-Kings have to be one of the best soul/funk bands in the world & if this doesn't convince you nothing will. IF YOU DON'T BUY THIS YOU'RE CRAZY!!

2014 effort from SHARON JONES & THE DAP-KINGS seems to slow things down a bit, overall. That nice, mid- tempo groove is evident throughout this album, which allows for subtle funkiness. Light some candles & throw this one on!
