After a few years of making music in collaboration with old buddies BILL CALLAHAN and MATT SWEENEY (plus new buddy MDOU MOCTAR), WILL OLDHAM returns again to the graceful solitude of his long-running BONNIE "PRINCE" BILLY project. His craggy voice & whimsical lyrics are first rate as always, wrapped up tightly in spare Americana & chamber pop stylings that suit him like a homespun knit sweater. He's backed here by a disarmingly skilled group of musicians, with strings & sax & the gorgeous harmonies of vocalist Dane Waters, who give intention to every single note in service of Oldham's dizzying melodies. We're already looking forward to returning to this one over and over again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

2003 Release from BONNIE PRINCE BILLY (aka WILL OLDHAM) is another masterful slab of country-tinged folk rock. More upbeat in subject than previous releases, this album has enough warmth and beauty to keep you inside on those cold cold days.

Will Oldham aka Palace/ Bonnie Prince Billy's new full length is much more of a return to his downhome backporch country folk tinged pop that we've all grown used to. Despite an experimental straying over the last few years, this new release, with the aid of PAPA M's Dave Pajo, is a complete return to the simple PalaceGospel that shines in meloncholy and Americana greatness.

Composer David Wingo of Ola Podrida (see 2013s "Ghosts Go Blind") teams up with instrumental giants Explosions in the Sky to score the David Gordon Green film "Prince Avalanche" staring Paul Rudd, Emile Hirsch, and Lance LeGault. These primarily acoustic, sparse compositions reminded us of the beautiful arrangements on Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s "Lift Your Tiny Fists..." or the mysterious and inspiring music of Yann Tiersen. For a band as transfixed with the instrumental medium, this is familiar territory where they can really shine.
