Notoriuosly missing co-founder Randy California but I really can't unrecommend this record, pretty unique on it's own even if it is called Spirit!

Collects Spirits 1st two psych-pop masterpieces!

This 1970 album from SPIRIT should have made them superstars. They achieved some mild success with the single "Nature's Way" (which still gets fairly heavy airplay on classic rock radio) but for some reason the album never really took off. This fourth & final album to feature the original line-up shows a band at the peak of their creative & technical powers. Lead by the freakishly amazing guitar playing from Randy California, the album draws influences from all over the musical spectrum including r&b, jazz, British invasion bands & American rock. There's some fun songs on this record but the highlights are the BEATLES esque tunes like "Nature's Way", "Morning Will Come" & "Life Has Just Become" that all feature complex vocal harmonies. We can't recommend this record enough, it's absolutley fantastic.

We're really excited to hear some new material from Philly weirdo-pop outfit SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE, who mix ethereal psychedelic shoegaze with sample-heavy electronics in the vein of Warp artists like BOARDS OF CANADA and ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER, while remaining strange and ever-evolving in their compositions and styles. You hear bits of death metal, hazy trip-hop and glitchy electro, never settling too neatly into one or the other. This is a fascinatingly abstract pop record from one of the more vital experimental bands currently making music. RECOMMENDED!

The 2022 SPIRITUALIZED album starts off with a woman's voice speaking the album title & the artwork is a play on a box of pills. Sound familiar? It should because Jason Pierce's now legendary "Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" also featured those two characteristics. One big difference on this one is the massive amount of musicians that participate, which sits about about 30. The last few albums have felt a little more "inward" but this one is BIG, with dense orchestrated & joyous explosions of notes. Jason Pierce is one of our favorite artists ever so anything new by the man is very welcome here. RECOMMENDED.

The early 90s space rock classic from Jason Pierce & SPIRITUALIZED is available once again this time on Fat Possum with updated cover art. Pierce's former band SPACEMEN 3 was slowly moving in a more "pop" direction & he solidified that move on the SPIRITUALIZED debut which was a mix of Brit Pop, psychedelic revival & space rock. This album has aged so damn well & it's great to be able to stock it in the racks once again. RECOMMENDED!
