When Josh Tillman isn't seemingly trying to piss everybody off (including his fans), he somehow manages to find the time to make pretty damn good records. Tillman's seems to have a good sense of humor about being a popstar though & it all seems like it's done out of fun. On "Pure Comedy", Tillman takes the 70's AM rockstar formula & runs with 1000%. While listening to this album, Elton John came to mind again & again, even Tillman's vocal inflection sounds similar at times to that of the dimunitive English legend & we'd be surprised if Tillman disagreed. Other 70's stars like FLEETWOOD MAC, Graham Nash & Jackson Browne & for contemporary reference, Neko Case are good markers for what FATHER JOHN MISTY is supposed to sound like in 2017.

It's about time! One of the best American post-punk records ever put to tape is finally back in print. "Crazy Rhythms" is chocked full of great art punk songs influenced a ton of people that went onto be in great bands including REM's Peter Buck who often cited them as one of his favorite bands (Buck would go on to record THE FEELIE'S second album "The Good Earth" reissued at the same time as this record). The songs are angular & tight, sort of like GANG OF FOUR with a folky edge or New Zealand's VERLAINES with more chops. If you're a fan of early 80's NYC stuff like TELEVSION & TALKING HEADS or any early ROUGH TRADE stuff then you really need to get this.
