Chicago trio HORSEGIRL makes their eagerly-awaited debut with "Versions of Modern Performance", seeing the teenage group explore angled post-punk and noisier discordance with grace and confidence, wrapping this sound around catchy, hook-laden pop tunes. There's an obvious SONIC YOUTH influence here, as well as a bit of GBV, a bit of WIRE, and a bit of that 80s/90s sound on Flying Nun. This is a fantastic debut from these local heatseekers. RECOMMENDED, and keep your eyes peeled for this group!

Catchy, groovy americana with a subdued feeling. There's this looming feeling that the bands about to cut loose with a raucous rock & roll anthem moment at any time, & sometimes when all 4 voices of the band are singing together you get this bar room brawl feel. It's a great sound that often gets compared to stuff like the BAND.

Tom Krell, a philosophy student from Brooklyn and Cologne, Germany, releases this collection of songs culled from a free EP called "The Eternal Love" with a handful of new tracks. Universally lauded by music communities across the globe, How To Dress Well fuses the genres of r&b, lo-fi indie pop, and mildly danceable, dance music. Some have focused on the lo-fi nature of the album, which we would argue is a non-issue (Times New Viking, for example, have made a career out of harsh sounding albums and held on to a consistent fan base). The home recording atmosphere, general static, and fuzz of the album adds to the overall tone and dreamy intention of the release. "Love Remains" sounds as though Panda Bear (Noah Lennox of Animal Collective) took Trey Songz by the hand to the washy depths of the indie-electronic underworld. Some songs have blatant R&B "borrowing" like on the track "Can't See My Own Face" which features some pretty obvious Beyonce-isms and "Endless Rain" has some dated drumming in the same vein as early 90s groups SWV or Bell Biv Devoe. Not yet being claimed as a concept album as much as a "new" genre, we can see why this album is garnering so much attention. In the same way Ariel Pink seems to be an oblivious, musical brain genius, Krell may have just stumbled across the right amount of lo-fi ambience, nostalgia, and mystery to make his music the album du jour.
