Wild Nothing
Empty Estate (limited Ed, Colored Vinyl) (w/ Poster, Stickers, Slap Bracelet)
 cover
Captured Tracks
After extensive touring abroad for "Nocturne" Jack Tatum was feeling a bit burned out and prioritized some down time to regroup. He is noted as listening to a lot of Bowie and Eno during his break in 2012 and "Empty Estate" is decidedly more electronic. His characteristic, careful vocals are almost secondary to the music. This is a concentrated effort concerning his frustrations and successes over the past three years which seem to have flown by with full-length or 7" releases every year he has been with Captured Tracks. Not unlike Deerhunter or Beach House there is a pop sensibility that is only overshadowed by the a hypnotizing emotional core. Recommended! -- This is the limited edition version of Wild Nothing's "Empty Estate" album which comes with a big folder full of goodies like a poster, stickers, slap bracelet, and a pin. Colored vinyl.

Corrections House
Hoax The System (colored Vinyl, Ltd 500) Grim With A Purpose
 cover
War Crime
Two tracks from CORRECTIONS HOUSE, which features SANFORD PARKER (TWILIGHT, BURIED AT SEA), MIKE IX WILLIAMS (EYEHATEGOD), SCOTT KELLY (NEUROSIS) & BRUCE LAMONT (YAKUZA). You read that right! This group is super! Both songs on this 7-inch have a drone-y, repetitive, industrial vibe with some spoken-shouted vocals & samples running beneath the pulsing guitars & drums. Hypnotic & with ill- intent, musically-speaking. RECOMMENDED!

Stetson, Colin
New History Warfare Vol. 3 (2lp, Poster) To See More Light (w/ Download)
 cover
Constellation
This third (and final) installment to composer Colin Stetson's "New History Warfare" series is arguably the best so far! Recorded live in single takes (no overdubs or loops) with a wide array of microphone positions, the duo of Stetson and producer Ben Frost acheives excellent results yet again. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is featured heavily, he sings on four tracks, and the addition of his characteristic voice rounds out the primarily instrumental pieces into something more down to earth. With Philip Glass glissando, Stetson plays notes in a fevered cadence with a warmth rarely felt in avant-garde or experiemntal music. This closing chapter is an impressive period on a musical narrative that started six years (2008) ago. VERY GOOD!

Fielded
Ninety Thirty Thirty
 cover
Captcha
Chicago ex-pat & former GA'AN member Lindsay Powell is back with her 2nd album under the FIELDED moniker, this time for the Captcha label. Powell's abstract take on vocal-driven pop music on her first album "Terrageist" floored us here at Reckless & we've been excited by the little hints of her new direction that have been floating around the internet & integrated into her live show for the past two years or so. On "Ninety Thirty Thirty" Powell is pretty much going for it, unashamed to let the diva flag fly with full-on forays into 70's & 80's electro-pop that lends itself as much to neon & silk robes as it does jean jackets & Daisy Dukes. There are some easy comparisons to make here like Kate Bush, Bjork THE KNIFE & even GRIMES but her extremely powerful voice accompanied with weirdo synthetic harmonies is truly unique. This is an amazing album & it will be on a few employee lists for 2013 for sure.

Dreambook
Only Shadows (w/ Download)
 cover
Thousand Year Egg
DREAMBOOK is a new band from the Philadelphia area & this is their debut release. The album is solid collection of 80's & 90's alt. rock sounds mixed with shoegaze. Think GALAXIE 500, INTERPOL, early R.E.M. & the Sarah Records label. An excellent start for these guys.

Dream Death
Back From The Dead (imp, 2lp W/ Book) (gatefold W/ Slip Cover Sleeve)
 cover
Svart
"Back from the Dead" compiles all three demos by the Pittsburgh cult death metal band DREAM DEATH. The demos included are "Dream Death" (1986), "More Graveyard Dwelling" (1986) & "Ode to Sorrow" (1988), the group's last 80's recording, released after their only album, the classic "Journey Into Mystery." All of the recordings have been remastered & the 2LPS come in a beautiful gatefold sleeve that fits into an awesome outer slipcase style sleeve. Also included is a book with tons of photos & vintage flier reproductions. DREAM DEATH's sound was a mix of heavy doom & death metal, think CELTIC FROST's slower moments with hints of ENTOMBED/ later Swedish death metal. CLASSIC!

Disappears
Kone (3trks)
 cover
Disappears
Over 30 minutes of new music from Chicago drone rockers DISAPPEARS including the epic 15+ minute song "Kone", a shorter 10 minute version & the song "Kontakt." This is also the first recordings to feature new drummer Noah Leger (ELECTRIC HAWK, ex-MILEMARKER, THEE SPEAKING CANARIES, HURL etc..) & his heavy hitting & solid presence is definitely apparent. The e.p. starts off with what sounds like an air-raid siren that drones on for a few minutes. Eventually, a tight mid-tempo beat emerges from the noise & one of the group's most kraut rock influenced grooves begins to develop. The song eventually devolves back into the drone that it began with. "Kontakt" has a dark, heavy fuzz bass sound & the track makes us think of more traditional rock version of SUICIDE. The e.p. ends with the shorter "Kone" track which ends on a lock-groove of guitar harmonics that you can drone on for eternity....

Anika
Anika Ep
 cover
Stones Throw
Following her self-titled debut, produced by Geoff Barrow of Portishead, the sparse, Nico-voiced wonder of Anika's music continues. This brief EP features a reworking of "Yang Yang," which was on her first album, and a bevy of cool covers. The Kinks' "I Go To Sleep" kicks off the album and it is followed by The Crystals' "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)," Chromatics' "In The City," and Shocking Blue's "Love Buzz." Vintage electronics, smokey vocals and simple arrangements make this short release another excellent example of Anika's distinctive sound.

Wolf Eyes
No Answer: Lower Floors
 cover
De Stijl
The mighty WOLF EYES ARE BACK! Since their last album, a line-up change has occurred--MIKE CONNELLY has left the band and his replacement is wildman CRAZY JIM BALJO, on guitar. The new sound is absolutely mind-wrecking, retaining signature elements while keeping things unpredictable. Slow, ominous experiments unfold, immersing listeners in a frightening space. Elements of dub, noise, text, punk...this is a great new album that people are going to absolutely love. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Nokturnal Hellstorm
Nokturnal Hellstorm
 cover
United Underground
Absolutely ripping black metal from Rochester, NY that features bass god DANNY LILKER alongside five other maniacal musicians. Think early-'90s black metal ala MAYHEM. There's keyboards, but used in such a way that doesn't detract from the songs nor is it the main focus like in DIMMU BORGIR. Mostly fast but with some dirges thrown in for bad measure. Check this out! Very, very RECOMMENDED!

Taking Pictures
2113'
 cover
Say Hello to Never
"2113" is the final record by the Chicago via Pittsburgh group TAKING PICTURES. The album was recorded in 2004/2005 by Jason Ward (Chicago Mastering Service) but before the group found a label for the record, they decided to go their separate ways. On their last tour Matt Jencik, Mat Daly & Noah Leger shared stages with the Japanese band BALLOONS. A lasting friendship developed & now almost a decade later, Say Hello to Never Recordings, a label run by members of BALLOONS, has released TAKING PICTURES' swan song. The album is a melting pot of styles, hinting at the group's post-hardcore early days in HURL, the progressive elements of fellow Steel Towners DON CABALLERO with the trio proudly wearing their influences on their sleeves including bits of HUSKER DU, MISSION OF BURMA, SONIC YOUTH & even a little Neil Young. After their demise, members of TAKING PICTURES went on to play with ELECTRIC HAWK, IMPLODES, DISAPPEARS,PAPA M (live) & SLINT (live 2007 "Spiderland" tour.)

 cover
Captured Tracks
Hot on the heels of the amazing live collection released on Goner in early 2013 comes this compilation of every TOY LOVE single, 1979 demos, a live track & a radio jingle from this short-lived New Zealand punk/post-punk/art-rock group that included Chris Know & Alex Bathgate of TALL DWARFS & Paul Kean from THE BATS. You can hear hints towards the future of the Kiwi scene with nods towards THE CLEAN & THE VERLAINES & bits of early Rough Trade bands, THE SOUND, P.I.L. & much more. This is an amazing collection that any fan of Flying Nun Records & New Zealand pop must have. Look forward to more Flying Nun reissues coming from Capture Tracks soon. Delfonics
Adrian Younge Presents The Delfonics (red Vinyl)
 cover
Wax Poetics
There was a golden voice buried in the annals of Philly's soul music history and it is finally being resurrected with this album. Some are calling this Adrian Younge produced album "the best Delfonics album since 1970." Wax Poetics has been branching out and releasing vinyl and hosting a digital store in addition to its stellar magazine, they note on how producer and artist got together: "On an initial phone call during the summer of 2011, [the] two artists quickly struck up a friendship. A few weeks later, William Hart [the] lead singer of Philly's quintessential soul group, the Delfonics, hopped on a plane bound for Adrian Younge's Los Angeles studio for the first of two sessions." Its sparse and spare production is what makes this release charming and intriguing. This could have been a heavily orchestrated and overblown come-back album but, with patience in mind, Younge and Hart have created something truly unique. Contemporary soul with nod to the sweet and sour smoothness of the 60s. Saudia Mills and Om'mas Keith also contribute to Hart's amazing falsetto on the album. Very Recommended for those who enjoyed the recent Bobby Womack and Gil Scott-Heron albums but also the back catalog of one of the best soulful vocal trios in the game, the Delfonics.

Implodes
Recurring Dream
 cover
Kranky
Chicago's mighty IMPLODES return with their 2nd highly-anticipated full-length for Kranky. This album retains their signature gauzy haze, but new clarity is added, giving more definition to the sound. Certain elements now shine like diamonds in the fog, appearing and regressing in a most pleasurable way. 'Recurring Dream' is darkly beautiful, utilizing colors of psych, shoegaze, goth and experimentalism. The musicianship is often on par with POPUL VUH, MBV, ROBERT FRIPP or even (gulp) DAVID GILMOUR, but without all that FM radio baggage, or any other baggage, for that matter--this is a pure pleasure cruise. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Olsen, Angel
Strange Cacti (2013 Reissue) (w/ Download)
 cover
Bathetic
Folks have been anticipating a solo album on vinyl for some time and in March 2011 Bathetic Records is doing everyone a favor and re-releasing Olsen's sold out cassette of original material "Strange Cacti" on 12" with reinterpreted artwork. Some have described Angel's music as haunting, others as uniquely natural, but whatever the individual take on her songs may be - they command the listeners attention. Laced with vintage reverb, simple chord progressions, and abstract lyrical content, her songs are a testament to the lasting effects and popularity of classic song structures. Her voice, the focal point of most recordings, contains sincerity, power, and a unique vulnerability necessary to balance out her sound. With out one of these attributes things would not be as interesting. In addition to her vocals, Olsen accompanies most songs with guitar and occasionally even accordion as featured on the cassette compilation "Summer Bummer," which also featured Best Coast, Dirty Beaches, Heavy Hawaii, Julian Lynch, Nude Beach, and many other contemporary luminaries. As the tone of Angel's music suggests, there is an unguarded, ebb and flow to her sound. Sounds that, with our environment in regard, will only grow and evolve. Second pressing via Bathetic for 2013.

Willowtip
This is easily a contender for metal album of the year & it's only March, 2013. Fans of the Willowtip label know that the madmen behind the label have been releasing cutting-edge death metal since 1999, & how they consistently find amazing bands is beyond us. Spain's WORMED have been making small waves in the underground but haven't released a full-length since 2003's "Planisphaerium." WORMED play an impeccably-recorded death metal that combines the groove of MORBID ANGEL, the guttural low-end sick- ness of CEPHALIC CARNAGE at their weirdest & insane blasting technicallity similar to CRYPTOPSY. You've gotta trust us on this one: simply amazing! You guessed it: HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEDNED!!!!!!!!

My Bloody Valentine
Mbv (imp, Lp/cd, 180g, Gatefold)
 cover
MBV
Can you believe it?? Is what you're holding in your hands actually the long-promised follow-up to "Loveless?" The pressure that Kevin Shields & co. must have been under to provide a worthwhile response to that legendary album must have been crushing & we're not surprised it took 20 years or so. If you managed to resist temptation to listen to shitty quality web streams (you obviously have nerves of steel!!) then we are very excited to tell you that this record is AMAZING. We're not saying that Shields has reinvented their sound or anything, this SOUNDS like a MY BLOODY VALENTINE record but there are some new elements here for sure, especially towards the end on the jungle influenced tracks that Shields has been hinting at since the mid 90's. Do yourself a favor & give this a few listens all the way through. The greatness of this record revealed itself to us slowly over a few listens & it seems to keep getting better. Also, if you have a nice set of headphones make sure to dabble in the fuzzy/warm ear candy that MBV have blessed us with. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE!! Vinyl edition also comes with a CD copy.

Sky Burial (2lp)

Relapse
Very interesting second album from Richmond's INTER ARMA. Blackened doom with heavy emphasis on the atmos- phere & doom. There's slow, evil blasts, tribal, NEUOSIS-style drums, acoustic songs . . . basically this is good because we can't easily classify it & originality is king. The best part is at their heart, INTER ARMA is a swampy, blues-riff loving band. Mix that with everything else & we're loving it. This rules!
