Dear web customers:

AS OF DECEMBER 6 2014, RECKLESS IS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING MAIL ORDER OPERATIONS.

There are a number of factors that are complicating our ability to properly run the mail order operations and we have chosen to suspend operations for the time being. We are in the process of major repairs at one location and we will be moving another location to a new building in the coming months. These projects, coupled with the holidays, are making web sales untenable.

The website will still show our catalog of in-stock items but we WILL NOT SHIP ORDERS. The shopping cart will be disabled and WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ORDERS VIA TELEPHONE FOR SHIPMENT, EITHER. We are sorry, we know we have a lot of great regular customers but we have to maintain this as a hard and fast rule.

We will make sure all previous orders have been fullfilled and any lingering questions addressed.

We will still sell GIFT CERTIFICATES for use in the shops, but they will not be redeemable online. We will refund anyone with a gift certificate who is unable to come into one of our shops in person.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience and we hope to be back up and running some time next year after the dust (literally!) settles.

Disappears
Irreal
 cover
Kranky
Chicago minimalist rockers are back in 2015 with their fifth album on Kranky. This has been the longest break between albums for the prolific group & during that time they've continued to perfect the art of restraint. "Irreal" is a percussion driven record with drummer Noah Leger & bassist Damon Carruesco leading the way on this dubby journey while the guitars provide crisp & rhythmic harmonics & noise textures. The singing is less screamy this time, instead Brian Case keeps it mostly soft & even to just a whisper at times. We're hearing a lot of PIL, POP GROUP, Jah Wobble, & KILLING JOKE here which is more than o.k. with us. Another amazing record from these Chicago boys.

Talker
Hari (white Vinyl)
 cover
Downwards
Chicago's TALKER (KARL MEIER & JON KROHN) return with a proper full-length after their 3-song 12-inch had us seizuring on the ground. The A-side is made up mostly of more atmospheric, industrial-style head- fuckery than anything with a steady "dance beat," more akin to "Black Snake" from their EP. The B-side is dominated by two long tracks, one custom-built to melt innards on the dancefloor & the other much creepier. The two most frantic songs close out the album, which we be getting repeated spins here at Reckless. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Available at: Milwaukee Ave.
New LP $21.99

Talker
Talker Cut The Weight (extended Version)
 cover
Downwards
Debut 12-inch from Chicago's TALKER, aka JON KROHN & KARL MEIER, longtime friends making some decidedly unfriendly music. The A-side "restucture" comes from KARL O'CONNOR (aka REGIS, one half of BRITISH MURDER BOYS) and stretches out "Cut the Weight"'s bleak, industrial vibe. Two more non-album tracks grace the B-side; "Carrier" is a below-the-earth's-crust dance- floor mover & "Black Snake" is more the stuff of a 4AM haze. Totally amazing & HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

New LP $12.99

Ono
Ennui (2015 Reissue)
 cover
Priority Male
2015 of this 1986 release from Chicago's most-bizarre ONO. This is all sorts of great . . . avant-garde synths, electric guitar & drum machine (sometimes) paired with their vocalist's (simply known as TRAVIS) poetry-preacher style knows no genre classification. Resurrected by Chicago's PRIORITY MALE label after a meticulous, YEAR-LONG tape transfer from the original masters. Essential stuff for psych or experimental "rock" fans. RECOMMENDED.

Intense, female-fronted, indie-punk that foreshadows 2014's "Say Yes To Love" -- this is loud, chaotic & wonderful! 12" version is single-sided w/ an etched B-side & a 32 page photo booklet documenting the band's 2014 tour!

Universal Togetherness Band
Universal Togetherness Band (w/ Download Code)
 cover
Numero Group
Numero Group strikes again!! This time they've unearthed a bunch of long-forgotten recordings from THE UNIVERSAL TOGETHERNESS BAND, a Chicago-based group led by Andre Gibson, a student at Columbia College's then still-new audio engineering program. The band existed from 1979 to 1982, basically the whole time Gibson was in school with free access to Columbia's plethora of studios & never-ending supply of eager audio-engineers-in-training. The group crafted a new party music that effortlessly blended soul, jazz-fusion, disco & new wave into a sound that was purely their own. Unfortunately for the band, Andre Gibson dropped out of school before an album could be crafted from the hours of material recorded -- but luckily for us, Numero Group has taken the time to do just that!

Decemberists
What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful :world (2lp, 180g, Etched Side 4, W/ Dl)
 cover
Capitol
Colin Meloy's career with the DECEMBERIST's has moved with the criticism of his works. Always bookish & literary to varying degrees, the alt-folk artistry is always beautiful. Here on their 7th LP, the literary bent has turned toward's meta-criticism, a really interesting way for Meloy to turn his pen.

Belle & Sebastian
Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance (4lps) (boxset W/ Poster & Download)
 cover
Matador
"Girls in Peacetime..." is the much adored Glaswegian group's ninth album & first in 4 years. This album has a bigger sound than you might be used to & though Stuart Murdoch & Co. have hinted at dance music in their past, they dive-in fully to the world of dance & Euro disco on a few tracks here. There's still plenty of introspective indie-folk tunes & Murdoch's lyrics are quite personal on a few songs. BELLE & SEBASTIAN do step a bit out of their comfort zone on this one but it's nothing that will rattle their fans or anything. This limited 4LP boxset edition comes with 4 extra songs & extended versions of two tracks, a poster & each LP comes in its own unique sleeve.

EXCELLENT debut full-length from California's NEIGH- BORHOOD BRATS! This shit seriously smokes. Female- fronted, snotty, Dangerhouse-y punk that can't help but remind us of AVENGERS, PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES, etc. Of course, this is on Deranged Records, who have flawless taste. RECOMMENDED!

Mass Media
Debut full-length from this Chicago post-punk band. This band is definitely influenced by NEW ORDER & SISTERS OF MERCY, but the songs are strong enough that you don't just want to listen to those bands, instead. In other news, we're happy we don't have to flip this record over as much as we did their 7-inches! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Pseudo Slang X Rawhead
Pseudo Slang X Rawhead Cyclical (w/ Download)
 cover
Sub-Bombin
2014 12-inch from Chicago's PSEUDO SLANG. "Cyclical" is a mellow, piano-and-drums track. "Feel Me" is jazzier & "Gotstaget" is more on the soul tip, production-wise. All three tracks are heavily lyrical, bringing to mind J-LIVE or ODDISEE. Also included are the instrumentals for "Cyclical" & "Feel Me" as well as the acapella for "Cyclical." RECOMMENDED!

Cowley, Patrick / Socarras, Jorge
Catholic (2lp, Reissue)
 cover
Dark Entries
Wow, this collaboration between disco god PATRICK COWLEY and singer JORGE SOCARRAS is truly an eye-opener. Recorded between 1976 & 1979, these collaborations are unbelieveably ahead of their time and mindblowingly excellent. These futuristic tracks remind us of so many things that followed or coexisted: THE NORMAL, CHROME, BUTTHOLE SURFERS, GARY NUMAN, JOHN FOXX or anything on MINIMAL WAVE. Elegant, trashy, punk, futuristic and Ballard-esque, these tracks will BLOW YOUR MIND. A must-have.

Afghan Whigs
Gentlemen (2014 Reissue) (remastered)
 cover
Rhino
For awhile there, you didn't hear many people talking about the AFGHAN WHIGS anymore. Time has been kind to the band though & their music has aged quite well & perhaps that's what led to them reforming recently, touring & even releasing a brand new album in 2014. At age 21, the 1993 album "Gentlemen" can now drink legally (though we suspect it's been drinking a long time) & it still sounds really great. Remastered & sounding as steamy as ever!

Biker Gone Beautiful Moon
 cover
Deal
The Kim Deal 7" series is a gift that keeps on giving. The 5th single in the series features her sister Kelley & Britt Walford of SLINT, who also played drums on THE BREEDERS "Pod" album. "Biker Gone" definitely has a similar sloppiness that makes THE BREEDERS such a unique band. Do yourself a favor & look up the video for the Lance Bangs directed video.

Branca, Glenn
Ascension (reissue)
 cover
Superior Viaduct
SUPERIOR VIADCUT continues to challenge for best reissue label with this version of Glenn Branca's epic 1981 album "The Ascension." In 1981, Branca was already one of the leaders of the NYC downtown no-wave & experimental scene & this album solidified his place in the city's musical history. The guitar orchestra featured SONIC YOUTH's Lee Ranaldo on guitar & Branca's influence on SONIC YOUTH is undeniable. Long form guitar jams that 'rock' but also fit in just as much with Coltrane's 'sheets of sound' as they do with SONIC YOUTH 6 string noise. About as essential as a reissue gets. RECOMMENDED!

Subpop
Before James Mercer caught the world by a storm with THE SHINS, he founded FLAKE MUSIC. With an impressive line-up including NEAL LANGFORD on guitar and JESSE SANDOVAL on drums, this release sounds as fresh as it did when it originally debuted in 1997. And thanks to Sub Pop it's coming out to you remixed and remastered! Think THE SHINS meets MODEST MOUSE & BUILT TO SPILL. Fans of melodic pop, fuzz guitar should take note!

Fernandez, J
Memorize Now (imp) (w/ Download)
 cover
Atelier Ciseaux
"Memorize Now" extends the compact retro-futuristic pop of Chicago's J Fernandez, giving new life to horns, organs, & tape delay. Behind all of it, a loose yet metronomic rhythm section maintains an air of effortless cool. Sounding fresh while mining the annals of early electronic pop and psychedelia, this EP manages to pack a long-player's share of ideas into an economical 16 minutes for maximum repeat listens. RECOMMENDED!
