Aphex Twin
Syro (3lp, 140g) (w/ Download)
 cover
Warp
After a 13 year hiatus APHEX TWIN returns in 2014 with "Syro," a sprawling & inviting journey into Richard D. James' unique world. While many of the signature elements are present -- his unique melodic voice, his sense of humor, his boundary-pushing compositions -- listeners will find a new, more mature APHEX TWIN on this record. In contrast to his more in-your-face albums like "Richard D. James Album" or "Drukqs," this one finds Mr. James willing to take his time drawing the listener into his world. Each track seems to undergo a series of continuous transformations from one bar to the next, where the conclusions often end up in a completely different place from their inception. Yet the overall experience feels very organic, welcoming, groovy & at times almost verging into an Aphex version of pop. Listeners familiar with his output will be reminded of his "Analord" and "Tuss" records but this one offers something altogether new & refreshing. Included with the artwork is a gear list and one can't help but hear "Syro" as the seasoned APHEX TWIN's personal synth history, exploring the decades of technology and innovation he has grown up with & which he & his listeners have come to love. Equal parts funky & mind-boggling this record is VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Goat
Commune (first Press W/ Bonus 7") (loser Edition, Colored Vinyl)
 cover
Subpop
The mysterious Swedish group GOAT blew our doors off back in 2012 with their debut. Those of us that were lucky enough to witness their set at the Empty Bottle in 2013 witnessed a mind-blowing spectacle & one of the most energetic live performances that we can remember. Since then the hype has grown & you know what that usually means...crash & burn time. Thankfully GOAT managed to shrug off the sophomore slump & "Commune" is pretty damn good. They haven't altered their formula much & the pastiche of AMON DUUL & the bulk of the "Love, Peace & Poetry" compilation artists (specifically Middle Eastern psych rock) is still the focal point of their sound. This album is less about hits & maybe requires a little more attention but there are some solid songs, specifically the last one "Gathering of Ancient Tribes." If you were a fan of the first one, you'll love this one too. First press Loser Edition is on colored vinyl & comes with a bonus 7". Very limited as always!!

Beak
Let Time Begin
 cover
Some Odd Pilot
After a stellar e.p. & a few years of performance under their belt, Chicago's BEAK finally deliver their debut album. "Let Time Begin" builds on the material from the e.p. & finds these guys pushing the boundaries of progressive metal. The songs are mostly mid-tempo with screaming vocals from the guitarists & the synth player (some of which get the vocoder effect) & there's some nice atmospheric moments with tasteful effects. The group surprisingly doesn't have a bassist but the deep synth tones fill those frequencies just fine. If you're into progressive metal like CULT OF LUNA, ENSLAVED, NEUROSIS, ISIS etc...then you should really check this out.

Excel
Split Image (2lp, 180grm Reissue) (beer Colored Vinyl, Ltd. Edition)
 cover
Southern Lord
Southern Lord continues their exploration of classic West Coast hardcore, this time setting their sites on the classic crossover/skate punk album from 1987 "Split Image" by EXCEL. It's hard to explain in 2014, but crossover hardcore bands were incredibly controversial back then. Bands like D.R.I. were considered traitors when they released their genre naming classic "Crossover" & bands like C.O.C., THE ACCUSED & SUICIDAL TENDENCIES were oft argued about between punks & metalheads who mostly hated each other. EXCEL definitely fit into this style with fast beats & hardcore "gang" vocals mixed with crunching metallic riffs & true no-no for most punks (unless you were BLACK FLAG), guitar solos. The reissue boats remastered sound & contains two of the band's demos & tons of rare photos. Limited edition vinyl comes with a 32 page booklet & a poster.

Soul Side
Trigger (2014 Reissue, Yellow Vinyl) Bass/ 103 (remastered, W/ Download)
 cover
Dischord
Dischord continue their remastered reissue campaign with the second album from SOUL SIDE that was originally released in 1987. SOUL SIDE was a mix of mid/late 80's hardcore sort of like DAG NASTY with a more progressive post-punk sound that was emerging led by FUGAZI, IGNTION & SHUDDER TO THINK to name a few. Like FUGAZI, SOUL SIDE was influenced by dub & reggae & their & singer Bobby Sullivan's lyrics were politically conscious & almost hippie-ish in nature. That might all sound like a terrible mix, but it really worked. The rest of the band featured players that would go on to form much-loved bands like GIRLS AGAINST BOYS & NEW WET KOJAK. This reissue also includes their fantastic "Bass/ 103" 7" & those songs are also remastered. Amazing things were happening in D.C. in the late 80's & here's some more proof for you. RECOMMENDED.

The Crypt
FINALLY!!! The Crypt strikes again with this amazing reissue of the incredibly rare & long out of print 1993 album from the Chicago area death metal band MORGUE. The group were label mates with the legendary Wisconsin metal band MORBID SAINT & the MORGUE album lives up to the greatness of that underground death metal classic. True 90's death metal with a heavy AUTOPSY, CIANIDE, PESTILENCE, GORGUTS etc.. influence. If you're a fan of Chicago metal then you really need to pick up this amazing reissue that also features their 1991 & 1992 demos on the 2nd LP.

Nasheim
Solens Vemod (imp, Green Vinyl) (ltd. To 300)
 cover
Northern Silence
First proper full length from this mysterious Swedish one-man black metal/post black metal project known as NASHEIM. We've been stocking the excellent LP "Evighet/ Undergang" compilation off & on for a few years & have been wondering if any new music was ever coming. Now that we've heard this amazing album, it's clear that the sole member Erik Grahn has been meticulously crafting this album over a number of years. All of the songs are over 9 minutes long & two of them are over 13 minutes long. The music is mostly mid-tempo, sort of like DRUDKH's "Handful of Stars" album but there are some moments where the songs break into some faster, 90's black metal speed. There's some tasty string overdubs that end the album which reminded us of AGALLOCH a bit. This is an amazing album that any fan of progressive black metal will want to hear. Fans of DRUDKH, ALCEST, AGALLOCH, WOODS OF DESOLATION etc... will love this. Limited press of 300 on green vinyl.

Woods Of Desolation
As The Stars (imp W/ Poster)
 cover
Northern Silence
2014 album from the one-man post-black metal project from an Australian man that goes by the name of "D." & calls his band WOODS OF DESOLATION. We've loved the previous W.O.D. albums & this one is really great too. WOODS OF DESOLATION albums have always featured guest musicians & "As the Stars" is no different with this one boasting Vlad from the mighty (& Reckless fave) DRUDKH. There's a good deal of melodic post-rock passages but the lo-fi recording & early 2000s black metal-isms blend together nicely with the pretty parts to create a good balance. If you like this, do yourself a favor & check out the new NASHEIM album "Solen Vemod" (also on the solid Northern Silence label) which is a solid compliment to this great album. Fans of DRUDKH, ALCEST, The Northern Silence label in general should check this out.

Melkbelly
Pennsylvania (black Vinyl) Hand #'d, Ltd To 400 Of 500, W/ Download
 cover
Automatic
Local four-piece, MELKBELLY, are out with their debut album and we can already safely say it will be on a few of our "Best Of 2014" lists at the end of the year. "Pennsylvania" walks that line between catchy, smart, melodic pop, and powerful, intense noise-rock. Fuzzy, gnarly guitars mixed with skilled drumming and Miranda Stokes' sweet, airy vocals make for a mind-spinning, tap your foot, head-nodding concoction. "Pennsylvania" reminds us a little bit of a PIXIES release, but way noisier and weirder, in the best possible way. And thanks to Automatic Recordings their debut is released on LP! MELKBELLY is purified awesome and so RECOMMENDED to the max. BUY THIS NOW!

Castle
Return Of The Gasface
 cover
Mello Music Group
Dirty soul beats, & twisted bars from the minds of MELLOMUSICGROUP's HAS-LO & CASTLE. RETURN OF THE GASFACE is HAS-LO's remixes on CASTLE's excellent (if slept on) debut, but with a twist as this features CASTLE re-recording his verses & adding ad-libs & some bonus verses. CASTLE's rhymes will immediately remind you of AESOP ROCK, but there's something a little different there in the finish, & HAS-LO's aesthetic fits perfectly with the MMG crew's boom bap knock, but so personalized in the fuzzy, dirtiness of his drums & horns. K7
TRICKY's 11th album sees the UK genius finally create what he considers to be a more "club" oriented LP. The 13 songs on "Adrian Thaws" retain TRICKY's signature mellow vibe with several guest vocalists, but are definitely closer to hip-hop or dance (for lack of a better term) than before. RECOMMENDED!

Cult
14-song collection written & recorded by KAREN O of the YEAH YEAH YEAHS between 2006-2010. In the liner notes, KAREN O says that these songs were inspired by crushes she had around this time, & the tunes are very stripped down (guitar & voice) & lovelorn. Pretty, low-key & catchy. RECOMENDED!

Total Control
Typical System (w/ Download)
 cover
Iron Lung
"Typical System" is one of the most anticipated records of 2014. The Aussie group's 2011 "Henge Beat" was one of our favorite records of that year & they might have done the impossible & topped that with this. TOTAL CONTROL also boast a seriously impressive line-up, featuring members that also play in UV RACE, EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING & LACE CURTAIN. "Typical System" expands upon the group's blend of punk, post-punk & new wave & all it works perfectly together in a way that sounds effortless. The first 3 WIRE albums are probably the best reference point here & the group bounces between melodic punk ("Pink Flag") & new wave ("154") without missing a beat. There are hints of Gary Numan, Jay Reatard & even more mainstream stuff like THE CARS at times. This will definitely be on many staff lists at the end of 2014. AS RECOMMENDED AS THEY GET!!!

Earth
Primitive & Deadly (2lp, Copper Vinyl)
 cover
Southern Lord
It's only been two years since the last EARTH record, but two years is too long when you're a band as good as they are. EARTH has been around for more than two decades and throughout that time they've released an incredible amount of impressive material. Amazingly, the band is still kicking with full force; this 2014 release is one of their best ever! This album features the distinct baritone of MARK LANEGAN on "There Is a Serpent Coming," and "Rooks Across The Gate". When LANEGAN's evil angel persona finds its cool counterpart in the sultry witch-echo of RABIA SHAHEEN QAZI (Rose Windows) on "From the Zodiacal Light," the results are spine-tingling. The tracks with vocals are a nice change of pace given it's the first we've heard them since "Pentastar" in 1996. But thankfully EARTH hasn't changed what makes them so great; their heavily distorted guitars, slow, tight drums, and captivating, droning, knock-you-out sound is still just as present. The first track on "Primitive and Deadly" is a mighty one, reminding us just how heavy their chops can be. You might say we haven't heard them this charged since their second album, "Earth 2", released back in 1992. As the record carries on, it goes back to that signature EARTH sound, bringing together lightness and darkness better than any group around. We can't say enough about this effort, it's a perfectly well-rounded album, pairing rumbling, powerful metal with dazed out bluesy-drone. It'll leave you knocked-out, begging for more, just as EARTH has always left us. The MOST RECOMMENDED! **Contains one exclusive vinyl only bonus track!

Temporary Residence
"Anchor" is the 2014 album from former BOOKS member Nick Zammuto & his band that got their name from some mysterious source. Zammuto continues to distance himself from the arty, sound collages that BOOKS were best known for. In fact, "Anchor" is a mostly straight-forward electronic pop record, with some cool 8-bit sounds & mellow tunes. Think POSTAL SERVICE, ATLAS SOUND, DIRTY PROJECTORS etc...
