Rough-and-tumble, yet melodic, punk from this Milwaukee band. Sometimes, these guys have a JESUS LIZARD feel going on, but then it's like we're listening to a FLOOR record & then the record closes with a JAWBREAKER cover ("I Love You So Much It's Killing Us Both"). RECOMMENDED!

Dischord
YES! First-ever recordings from FUGAZI, which were put to tape in January of 1988. After this demo was recorded, the band went out on tour, came back & recorded their self-titled debut EP. This has early versions of "Bad Mouth" & "Waiting Room," as well as "Merchandise," which wasn't re-recorded until 2001 during the "Argument" sessions. In addition to all of that, this has "Turn Off Your Guns," which was excluded from the original cassette. FYI - only one of these songs was ever released formally, that being "In Defense of Humans," which was on the "State of the Union" comp. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED!

APOLLO BROWN is one of the rising star producers in Hip Hop right now, at least in our humble Reckless oppinions. He's got a knack for finding great samples & crafting soulful, sometimes cinematic beats & putting them together to compliment the MC he's working with, in this case RAS KASS. RAS KASS is one the west coast's hidden gems, a talented spitter who combines deft lyricism with street tales & a ton of bravado. He's also got an incredibly distinctive voice that's impossible to ignore. If you liked any of the work APOLLO's done with GUILTY SIMPSON, O.C., or UGLY HEROES, grab this one. 2014 reissue of this legendary album, produced by PETE ROCK! This reissue comes with a bonus 7-inch featuring "It's So G," with vocals by ROC MARCIANO! Here's what we had to say in 2008, when this first was released: Hello, this is hip-hop. PETE ROCK, hip-hop producer and MC extraordinaire, releases this banger after a four year hiatus. This is a joint release between Soul Survivor Records and NY based indie label Nature Sound, and has an all-star roster. Members of WU-TANG, RAEKWON and MASTA KILLA, JIM JONES, PAPOOSE, REDMAN, STYLES P, and others donate rhymes and skills on "NY's Finest," making it one of the best rap releases of 2008. Computer Ugly
Once the heir apparent to the DILLA sound & style, BLACK MILK has worked out his own signature. A feel for soul & drums that's rare & beautiful. But, not only is he an excellent producer, dude's got BARS. He can hang with the best of them on the mic, a talent that he's developed & mastered to where he never sounds overmatched or out of place, even when you put him up against legends, like PETE ROCK or BUN B who both show up here. BLACK MILK can stand tall with the best of both disciplines, a rare talent that you should definitely check out!

Kranky
In December of 2013, Kranky celebrated their 20th anniversary with a 4 day concert series in Chicago. Liz Harris headlined one of the nights at Constellation & it was one of the most quiet & fragile performances that many of those present have probably ever witnessed. The extreme quiet created was the opposite of say of SUNN O))) show but there was just as much tension. Harris has successfully captured that tension on "Ruins." The album was recorded for an artist's residency in Portugal in 2011 & most of the songs are piano & voice with barely any of GROUPER's trademark washy reverb. The album has a stark & lonely, fly-on-the-wall quality with ambient sounds of insects & rain & it's easy to imagine Harris alone in her room at night carefully crafting these songs. Harris' voice is barely above a whisper & the piano playing is a simple sort of mix of Erik Satie & P.J. Harvey's on "White Chalk". The album ends with an older track, the only real hint at her reverby past, either symbolizing Harris unwillingness to let go of that past or perhaps a statement that she is moving onto a new phase.
