Olsen, Angel
Lady Of The Waterpark (limited To 100, Blue Tapes)
 cover
Love Lion
Chicago's Angel Olsen has carved out a name for herself first as a solo artist but over the years has perfomed with or opened for the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, the Cairo Gang, and Marissa Nadler. This six song tape features a set of cover tunes all by female vocalists like Dolly Parton, Skeeter Davis, Helen Shapiro, Gloria Jones, Sandy Posey, and a steller reinterpretation of a traditional folk song that once was covered by ESP Disc artist Patty Waters. If you haven't heard Angel's music by now, it may be time to take notice!

Caretaker
Patience (after Sebald) (imp)
 cover
History Always...
James Leyland Kirby aka CARETAKER has supposedly been working on this soundtrack to the documentary about German writer W.G. Sebald by Grant Gee for some time. Kirby used out-of-copywright recordings of Franz Schubert works from the late 20's & sculpted them the way that THE CARETAKER does, slowing them down, adding or accentuating noise & creating an overall dense & inviting mood. There are definitely similarities to the much lauded "An Empty Bliss Beyond This World" but Kirby definitely takes this style to a new level here. Another beautiful painting by Ivan Seal graces the cover. Limited edition of 700 copies.

Those Once Loyal (2012 Reissue)
 cover
Metal Blade
"The Birmingham, England, natives have been singularly obsessed with the brutality of war as filtered through guitar, bass, and drums since the late 80s. They're dependable to a fault, and that's either a strength to those who love them or a weakness to their detractors. On their eighth studio album, "Those Once Loyal," fat riffs wrap themselves around a relentless rhythm section that can go from thrash to mid-tempo doom metal at the crack of a rifle. Longtime fans will celebrate the return of original vocalist Karl Willetts, as his death metal croak is significantly deeper than previous vocalist Dave Ingram. "Those Once Loyal" may not break any new ground for the band, but one would be hard pressed to find a better use for the term heavy metal." -James Christopher Monger

Gonjasufi
Mu.zz.le (2x10", W/ Download) Muzzle
 cover
Warp
First 2012 release from GONJASUFI (we're sure there's more to come) sounds like a lost, electronica-inspired PINK FLOYD album. Dirty, warbled vocals over dusty rhythms & synths that sound like they're coming from two rooms over show only the slightest traces of the hip-hop GONJASUFI used to be neck-deep in. Fans of PORTISHEAD or earlier Anticon label stuff should give this a whirl.

Portland based musician Ilyas Ahmed is back with another album in early 2012. Breaking Day (w/ Download)
 cover
Immune
"Breaking Day" is the second album from the Chicago duo CLEARED aka Michael Vallera & Stephen Hess (also of LOCRIAN.) This album finds the group hurtling further into space with more complex rhythm structures that remind us of everything from CURRENT 93 to THIS HEAT & even some early SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE sounding experimental leaning psych rock. Don't be alarmed though, CLEARED is still based mostly around dark, minimalist drones & "Breaking Day" features plenty of bleak dronescapes.

Enslaved
Frost (imp, 2011 Reissue, Black Vinyl)
 cover
Osmose
ENSLAVED has been a favorite at Reckless for a number of years now. We've loved following their progression from the blackened Viking metal sound of their early records to their current Progressive, extreme 'post-metal' style. Finally, the legendary 1994 album 'Frost' is available again on vinyl. At the time, ENSLAVED was deep into their Viking period though there's plenty of black metal sounds to be found here as well. The other Osmose reissues haven't lasted long so don't wait on this.

 cover
Osmose
ENSLAVED has been a favorite at Reckless for a number of years now. We've loved following their progression from the blackened Viking metal sound of their early records to their current Progressive, extreme 'post-metal' style. Finally, the classic 2003 album "Below the Lights" is available again on vinyl. On their 2000 album, "Mardraum", ENSLAVED began moving away from their Viking/black metal sound towards a more progressive, almost psychedelic take on black metal. Their next album "Monumension" continued this progression but "Below the Lights" is where the group really found their footing & hints of what they sound like today really began to appear. This was their most accesible album yet with haunting keyboard interludes & their catchiest & most melodic riffs up to this point. ENSLAVED still include a few of these songs in their set in 2012 while ignoring most other pre "Isa" material. "Below the Lights" is arguably ENSLAVED's best album & now's your chance to own a copy on vinyl, the way it was meant to be heard. Limited Osmose repress comes with a huge poster featuring the cover art.

Limited edition (and supposedly already out of print) 7" from Norwegian legends ENSLAVED. These songs were recorded in late 2010/early 2011 & definitely sound more like "Isa" & "Ruun" era stuff than than the recent albums, specifically because of the total lack of clean vocals. Both songs are amazing. Get this now as we'll never have them again!

Alcest
Les Voyages De L'ame (imp, W/ Poster) (white Vinyl)
 cover
Prophecy
ALCEST is back with their third album & this is likely the first great record that we've received at Reckless for 2012. Niege & co. haven't altered the formula that much but they have tweaked things a bit to make this record flow a little better than the last one. The album still straddles between gorgeous & shimmering shoegaze pop (see the first track 'Autre Temps') & blast-beat filled black metal-isms (see track 2 & more) but somehow the two seem to be combined in way that seems less schizo this time around. Niege is an excellent songwriter & it seems that he's only getting better so we can't wait to hear what's next. This import only vinyl features different cover art than the CD version which comes out in the U.S. in late January 2012.

Guided By Voices
Let's Go Eat The Factory (w/ Download)
 cover
Guided By Voices
After the 2010 reunion of the original line-up of GBV we could only hope for an album from these guys & here it is, our wish (& we imagine your's too) has come true. Robert Pollard has released possibly 20 albums (no joke) since the demise of the self-referred 'classic line-up' & though many of those records are great, none of them have the magic that only this group of drunk old men can conjure. These guys have been through a lot together & perhaps that's why it works. Tobin Sprout was always the wild-card in our eyes, breaking up the heaps & heaps of Pollard songs nicely with his sugary sweet pipes & that's true again here. Nobody else harmonizes better with Pollard either. We're not going to say that this is better than "Bee Thousand" or "Alien Lanes" but after one listen we think this may be the best GBV album since "Under the Bushes, Under the Stars", the last album that the classic line-up all played on before this one. This one is fo realz folks.

Telebossa
Telebossa (imp)
 cover
Staubgold
Based in Berlin, the duo of Telebossa (Nicholas Bussmann and Chico Mello) blend Brazilian choro music and minimal electronics to create a full spectrum of emotion with their sparse arrangements. Classical minimalism, shuffling rhythms, samba and bossa-chamber orchestrations all collect here creating one of the most interesting releases of 2011. Not unlike the ingenuity of Caretaker, Philip Glass pupil Nico Muhly, bossa nova legend Joao Gilberto, or the inventiveness of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascaol, Telebossa have crafted a delicate medium between their two specialties and the results are brilliant. Among the songs included on this self-titled album there are dedications to choro composer Pixinguinha's compositions "Ingenuo" and "Naive," Noel Rosa's "Seculo do Progresso," and Mello's own "Samba do Budista," penned with Carlos Careqa. If you are at all interested in the afore-mentioned musicians or Caetano Veloso, Noel Rosa, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Chico Buarque - this album is for you.

Toure, Ali Farka
Ni Foli Aft (ni Foli)
 cover
Social Music
Blown out crazy Ali Farke Toure performances from taken from a cassette made in 1984. These droning, Saharan guitar tunes come from arguably the best guitar player in Mali and one of the best known musicians from the continent of Africa. Allowing his influences of American blues, sitar music and traditional Malian songs to form his own signature hypnotic guitar shredding solidifies his reputation and makes for beautiful and complex music. "The African John Lee Hooker" could be considered the pre-cursor to the contemporary world-music lover's obsession with guitar music from the Saharan region and is a ESSENTIAL listen. Ride For Revenge
Under The Eye (imp)
 cover
Kvlt
Third album from this truly unique sounding black metal band from Finland. The album starts with a intro of primitive electronics then quickly explodes into a lo-fi fireball of crackling, noisy guitars & cardboard box sounding drums. RIDE FOR REVENGE aren't afraid to use weird effects on their vocals & on some songs it sounds like they're using on of those toy megaphones that makes your voice sound like a robot. Think BEHERIT with bizarre electronics, lo-fi production & a heavy occult vibe. THIS RULES!

Burzum
From The Depths Of Darkness (imp, 2lps) (180grm, Black Vinyl)
 cover
Back On Black
Varg Vikernes has been rather busy since being released from prison a few years back. Within just a few months of getting out, he dropped the amazing "Belus" album then a few short months later he gave us another new album, "Fallen." On "From the Depths...", Varg has 're-imagined' songs from his early albums with recordings that sounds closer to the recent releases. Diehards are going to likely cry foul right away but we suggest giving this a listen before decrying this release entirely. We admit that the atmosphere & slop of the original recordings is what made them 'kvlt' in the first place but we have to say, some of these new recordings sound really killer. A fellow Reckless employee noted that this re-recording isn't that much different than say RUSH putting out a live album. Since BURZUM has never played live, why can't he revist some old tunes?

Bang
Death Of A Country (imp, 180g)
 cover
Rise Above
BANG was an American hard rock band that released a few records on Capitol in the early 70s. At the time, many considered BANG to be America's answer to BLACK SABBATH. Though they had some minor success, the group never really caught on with mainstream audiences. They did manage to release some killer albums and record this 1971 album "Death of a Country" that Capitol refused to release because it wasn't commercial enough. The album has more of a psychedelic edge than their other releases, reminding us of Syd Barrett era PINK FLOYD with heavier riffage. Fans of proto metal stuff like POSSESSED (70's), SIR LORD BALTIMORE, PINK FAIRIES etc... will love this. Limited edition.

Southern Lord
Two doses of doom in one package! Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley rise up from the remains of Burning Witch, Goatsnake and Thor.s Hammer to create the mighty Sunn O))). Named after the powerful amplifiers they employ, "OO Void" is a sprawling mess of side long tracks that displays the group's tenacious "Power Ambient" drones, not unlike Earth and the Melvins (whom they cover here), but also recalling the Minimalist aesthetics of Tony Conrad and Lamonte Young. Sick! The bonus disc is a re-working of Sunn O)))'s 2000 album "OO Void" by the legendary Nurse With Wound originally released as a bonus disc on the Japanese version of the "OO Void" CD. Harpoon
Deception Among Birds
 cover
Seventh Rule
HARPOON's 2009 album "Double Gnarly/Triple Suicide" was pretty shredding, sure. For their 2011 album, though, they've added a bass player to fill out their sound & the production is way better. While "Double Gnarly" was more a spastic punk/grind record, this one still contains elements of hardcore/grind, but incorporates all sorts of different influences into the mix thanks to DEAN COSTELLO's jaw-dropping guitar work (not to mention his drum machine-programming skills), TONEY VAST-BINDER's vocal range & DJ BARRACA's fresh take on songwriting for HARPOON (he was in LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR previously). Bottom line is that this record is heavy as hell, but varied enough so it's never boring. One of the best releases of 2011!! H I G H L Y R E C O M M E N D E D !!!!!

Cracknation
Chicago's CZAR ripped us a new one with their "Depthless Paradise of Terror" CD two years back, but this record is a step up in every way. Their music is a mish-mash of Germany's THE OCEAN & melodic, hard rock like QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE mixed with technical riffs for good measure. For a three-piece, these guys use their considerable chops to make considerable noise. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Hecker, Tim
Dropped Pianos
 cover
Kranky
This second release from Tim Hecker in 2011 isn't exactly a proper album, instead "Dropped Pianos" is a collection of piano sketches that the album "Ravedeath, 1972" was based on. This release is quite opposite in many ways down to the negative image of "Ravedeath's..." cover. Where "Ravedeath..." is grandiose in scope with Hecker recording the pieces in an Icelandic church, "Dropped Pianos" is intimate, sparse & cold with icy piano notes drenched in a cathedral esque reverb. More of a compendium than a proper album, but breathtaking none the least.
