It's been 3 years since FUCKED UP's epic "David Comes to Life" album & it feels like 3 LONG years. The Toronto group smartly took their time working on the follow up & decided upon a surprisingly straight forward, standard album length record. It wouldn't be a FUCKED UP record without a twist though. They also recorded entirely different 'half-speed' drum tracks for every song that are included on the limited edition LP version. Singer Damian Abraham has always been a talented & thoughtful lyricist & he continues the trend here, musing on the group's fame & how it might or might not have effected the way the hardcore scene view them now, not to mention how the group views themselves. FUCKED UP have always been a forward thinking band & they left behind typical hardcore cliches long ago but you can tell they're still trying to hold on to a few strands of their youth, possibly hoping deep down that they'll never forget. We certainly don't think they will.

After two decades of pushing the boundaries of what "hardcore punk" can be, FUCKED UP set an extreme condition on their 6th LP & 2nd for Merge - each band member wrote & tracked their parts in separate, isolated 24-hour periods. The result is the most bracing & immediate music they've made in a real long time, with a back-to-basics approach to melody and riffage that must make their labelmate BOB MOULD very proud. The avenue they're on can probably be better summed up as "hardcore power pop" now, but we're always gonna be game to take the trip with them. HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The 2011 album from Toronto's FUCKED UP is a punk rock opera with a rather complex plot. David works in a light bulb factory sometime in 60's/70's Thatcher England. The album tells his story through a series of complex relationships with a variety of women including Veronica & Vivian. We're not going to get too deep into the plot though but we will tell you that FUCKED UP has made another incredibly strong record. The 'wall of sound' guitar sound is back & as always, despite the melodic hooks, PinkEyes keeps it real with his gutteral, barked vocals. The lyrics have always been an integral part of the FUCKED UP concept & that continues here albeit in story form. Guests include KURT VILE, members of VIVIAN GIRLS, CULTS members etc...

The respected Toronto punk rockers FUCKED UP return with a new album & like always, they've changed the conversation of what a punk rock band can sound like. Over the course of these two discs, the 6 piece band crams as many ideas as possible into this record, adding strings & brass, multiple singers on different songs, varied song arrangements & tons of studio experimentation & most importantly, the return of the fictional character David, who was introduced on "David Comes to Life" who takes center stage as the lyrical theme of this record as well. This seems to be the sound of a band in transition & rumors are swirling about that longtime vocalist Damian Abraham might even be stepping aside soon. FUCKED UP fans should be accustomed to the unexpected by now & we'd imagine that's what most people love about the band. There are plenty of surprises here & we think you'll love it. RECOMMENDED.
