We've reached that point where pandemic records are being released. Nick Cave is one of the world's greatest performers & he should be sweating through his fancy suit & stage diving into crowds. Instead, he's recorded this intimate album of himself alone at a piano in an empty theatre in London playing 21 songs from throughout his career. Beautiful stuff.

Do we have to spell it out? 3-cd's worth of b-sides and alternate versions from NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS. This is a RECOMMENDED treat for the hardcore Cave fans. On MUTE.

"Ghosteen" is the first Nick Cave album of entirely new songs since the death of his son Arthur in 2015. The tragedy was addressed in some parts of "Skeleton Tree" & the companion film that went with it, but the grief & sorrow of losing his child is spread throughout this incredible album. The mood is obviously sombre at times but there is a sense of hope & healing to be found. There aren't any drums or much rhythm at all here, instead the mostly synthesizer based songs flow along, almost in a stream of consciousness way that fits perfectly with the often spoken lyrics & choir backing vocals. The album feels like a person trying to work through their grief & pain in their head & how sometimes brief moments of happiness will appear then get erased almost immediately in guilt. No doubt this is heavy affair but it's a beautiful one too. RECOMMENDED.

Cave's lyrics are short story-like with spoken word passages at times with sparse arrangements & beats. This probably most similar to the recent "Ghosteen" & the other more subdued Cave album like "No More Shall We Part" & "Boatman's Call" but there's an experimental "looseness" that Ellis brings to the songs. RECOMMENDED OF COURSE.

By now we'd imagine that most of you know that Nick Cave's teenage son died tragically in the summer of 2015. Cave & THE BAD SEEDS were about halfway through with this album when that occurred so the record is obviously engulfed by that tragedy. The songs are sparse & fractured & sound more like improvised sketches at times with poetic, almost spoken vocal performances. You probably won't be surprised to hear that album has a pretty dark vibe but many of the songs are truly beautiful & ultimately somewhat sad considering everything. Tragedy can sometimes breed creations of great beauty & that's certainly the case with "The Skeleton Tree." HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION POSSIBLE.
