Tom Krell, a philosophy student from Brooklyn and Cologne, Germany, releases this collection of songs culled from a free EP called "The Eternal Love" with a handful of new tracks. Universally lauded by music communities across the globe, How To Dress Well fuses the genres of r&b, lo-fi indie pop, and mildly danceable, dance music. Some have focused on the lo-fi nature of the album, which we would argue is a non-issue (Times New Viking, for example, have made a career out of harsh sounding albums and held on to a consistent fan base). The home recording atmosphere, general static, and fuzz of the album adds to the overall tone and dreamy intention of the release. "Love Remains" sounds as though Panda Bear (Noah Lennox of Animal Collective) took Trey Songz by the hand to the washy depths of the indie-electronic underworld. Some songs have blatant R&B "borrowing" like on the track "Can't See My Own Face" which features some pretty obvious Beyonce-isms and "Endless Rain" has some dated drumming in the same vein as early 90s groups SWV or Bell Biv Devoe. Not yet being claimed as a concept album as much as a "new" genre, we can see why this album is garnering so much attention. In the same way Ariel Pink seems to be an oblivious, musical brain genius, Krell may have just stumbled across the right amount of lo-fi ambience, nostalgia, and mystery to make his music the album du jour. In 2011, Light in the Attic released an amazing compilation of material by legendary Korean guitarist Shin Joong Hyun. Now Lion Productions gives us a reissue of the 1974 album by Shin Joong Hyun & his grouip YUP JUNS. The name literally translates to "brass coin" but the term was slang that meant 'something unpleasant.' There's nothing unpleasant about the album though, the record is full of funky riffs, grooves & beats with tight playing & songs that would sound much heavier with a little distortion.
