Te captain's first-and most inconsistent until 1974's "unconditionally guarenteed"-this is still a fantastic album with plenty of Don Vliet's unique idiosyncracies, but duffused with heaps of west coast psychedelic pop...the bonus tracks here, represent the real gear change, setting the template for what would become "mirror man" and "strictly personal"....these outtakes remained unheard until the early nineties.

Another album in 2011 from Bob Pollard, this time from CIRCUS DEVILS. This album seems to have some almost Todd Rundgren schizophrenia too it with prog-heavy bits, 70's soft rock parts, avant-pop almost like Ariel Pink & more. Definitely a varied effort from Bob & the boys. Bring on that classic line-up album!

Imagine THE FEELIES or THE SHINS if they were allowed as much time in the studio as FLEETWOOD MAC or yacht rock if it was swapped with 80's alternative rock. RECOMMENDED.
