Composer Daniele Luppi & producer DANGER MOUSE combine for this 'soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist' aka 'Rome.' The music is cleary inspired by 60's movie soundtracks & we hear hints of David Axelrod in there too. The duo brought in Jack White & Norah Jones for vocal duties & they compliment the music perfectly. Some of the production reminds us a little of the 90's lounge revival ala groups like AIR mixed with that 60's sound we mentioned earlier.

This here is the major label debut from the DECEMBERIST's on CAPITOL. This album starts off with a tender folkey number & segue's into a progressive jam session lasting near the 13 minute mark. "The Crane Wife" is loosely based on a Japanese folk tale that concerns a crane, an arrow, & a beautiful woman. As the album develops one could tie elements of another land & time. A time when all man (or woman) needed was an instrument & open space. Although less diverse, the instrumentation is still accordians & other squeeze-boxes abound; longtime fans will not be disappointed & fans of BELLE & SEBASTIAN, & some of the new folk revival bands should check this out.

Recorded in a converted barn on Oregon's Pendarvis farm, as some of the best records put to tape have been (i.e. Neil Young's "Harvest," the Band's "Music From Big Pink"), there is something to be said for isolating a band.s mission in the middle of no where for the best results. This set of 10 concise, country-based songs shows the band moving towards simplicity. Meloy says, "For all my talk about how complex those records were, this one may have been harder to do... It's a real challenge to make simple music, and lot of times we had to deliberately hold off and keep more space. This record is an exercise in restraint." Using the same producer as on 2009s "The Hazards of Love" (Tucker Martine) this album features guest appearances by Gillian Welch on seven tracks and R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. Fans of R.E.M., Camper Van Beethoven, Neil Young and the Byrds undoubtedly will enjoy this next installment of Americana rock.

On Mac Demarco's "2"nd album, there is more of what "Rock and Roll Night Club" brought to the table but also with good-natured, sensitivity here. Don't worry Mac and his merry men still distort and sully traditional rock-pop with a blanket of cigarette smoke and queezy guitar tones. Songs like "Ode To Viceroy" or "My Kind of Women" manage to be love songs but as with "Viceroy," it's a love song to a smokers solitary moments with there favorite brand of tabacco. As much as Demarco and his band like to clown around, "2" is more mature and is teeming with evidence of the music to come. File this under the "Under the Radar" catagory next to Matthew E. White's recent tour de force and near your Ween and Ariel Pink albums.

Mac DeMarco, formerly Makeout Videotape, is the anti-thesis to your stereotypical singer-songwriter. His new label, Captured Tracks says, "DeMarco's a weird cat cultivating an affinity for occult imagery, nudity and social satire." With the hair brained antics of Captain Beefheart, the lo-fi recording techniques of say Ariel Pink, the underlying depression of Skip Spence and the classic coolness of Elvis (only if he was a twink... can we say that?) this album has made a bee-line to our gender-bending loving hearts. Highly anticipated 2014 album from MAC DEMARCO is jangle-pop mastery. DEMARCO's low-key vocal delivery is part of what sets him apart, but it's the perfectly simple songwriting that's key. You can hear some of his (likely) influences: NILSSON, JOHN LENNON, JONATHAN RICHMAN. A must-have! On Captured Tracks.

MAC IS BACK, baby. All you slackers , skeezers, freaks, & weirdos gather round for another full length from your favorite nicotine advocate. This is the cleanest and well produced effort yet from our boy Mac, who's songwriting only seems to be getting better & better. These songs seem a bit more subdued & mature, which is a good thing, though don't think for a second he's lost his wit or fun side. Acoustic guitar and rhythm boxes are a nice change of pace from his chorus-saturated guitar that populated his previous LPs, and the electric piano and synth tones from "Another One" make a return as well. Very solid, chill, and enjoyable effort- if the past LPs were good for a boogie, save this one for the slow dance.

Thomas Eicke (aka TOM DIABO) was a late 70s early 80s German punk musician (of WESTERN FORCE & X 112 FOR DANCING most notably) who died of cancer shortly after his 30th birthday. His beautifully lo-fi solo guitar & drum machine home recordings were collected after his death & released as limited run LP in 1988. Here that album is lovingly remastered & reissued 25 years after its initial first run along with 2 bonus tracks & liner notes from his longtime ex-girlfriend. Haunting yet glorious in all its home-recorded mess, "Dark Star" is perfectly poppy & continuously re-listenable. Amazing, lo-fi bedroom post-punk with a bit of a gothy edge.

DILATED PEOPLES return with their third full length of thier token posi-hop/battle-rhyme hybrid. Here EVIDENCE leages the production largely in the hands of ALCHEMIST and DJ BABU, with the occaisonal track by him or JOEY CHAVEZ.
