"Turn Out the Lights" is the second album from this Memphis based singer/songwriter. At just 21, Baker is wise beyond her years & this is an incredibly mature album. Many of the songs deal with themes of break-ups & depression & the record definitely has a chilly, autumn feel to it so it's release is well-timed. The guitars are crisp & clean with a good amount of chorus & some tasteful string accompaniment. Musically, there are hints of emo on the edges of this, with nods at EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY or AMERICAN FOOTBALL triumph that doesn't ever really materialize, instead Baker's gut-wrenching voice & lyrics provides all of the atmosphere & bombast that would likely be ruined by a big rhythm section. Fans of her first album, Sharon Van Etten, CAT POWER etc...will love. RECOMMENDED.

As if the cowboy fits on the back cover don't give it away, TORRES and JULIEN BAKER go country, harmonizing and trading of lead vocal duty on a brisk collection of songs that share a sound with contemporaries like ANGEL OLSEN and WAXAHATCHEE / JESS WILLIAMSON (aka PLAINS). Really beautiful stuff on Matador.

John Barry at his very best w/ overly dramatic title cut. Set the tone for many spy theme to come!
